What color climbing rose would you put on a arbor over the gate??

I need some suggestions on what color climber you would put on a arbor that will go in front of this gate in our yard.. I have a Blaze rose bush climbing the shed. Love that blaze as it reblooms all summer.

Jess, your plantings around your shed are just beautiful! Nice job! Was there a particular color you were looking for? What zone are you in? Are you willing to keep the climber canes over the gate pruned or do you prefer a thornless rose? All those things make a difference and will help you with your decision. If you are in a colder zone, like zone 5, John Davis, a pink double rose, is a good choice. One of the Explorer roses, it is cane hardy in zone 5 and a pretty good everbloomer, as well as fairly thorn free. New Dawn, another pink, is also quite hardy. It will put on a lot more height than John Davis and also reblooms, but it does have thorns. Ramblin' Red is a hardy red climber in my garden - a great grower and rebloomer, very disease resistant, but does have thorns. Give us a few ideas of what you are thinking of and we'll come up with more suggestions.

Lovely garden scene! With the colors you already have my inclination would be to choose a white, pale yellow or pale pink climber. I'm too far out of your zone to suggest a suitable variety. Good luck with finding the perfect rose.

I don't think it would have any problems adapting. You may have to prune it back some and then train the new growth as it comes out. But I think it would be very happy with a new support system. I would just caution you that any arbor you get should be a very good quality STRONG one because you're not going to want to have to replace it anytime soon, lol! Lovely rose by the way! It's hard to tell from that one picture but it does look like it could be Cecil Brunner. I've posted a link to your picture below. Here is a link that might be useful:

Thanks the morden man, they are pretty when they are in bloom.....just planted Blossomtime and Awakening rose bands next to them, hopefully in 3 years I will see some re-blooms out of the same spots. Also I will try deadheading after their first bloom this year.....I might buy another New Dawn and give it a try if I can find a grafted one at any local nursery...... I see you're in Ontario, there is a Niagara Parks Botanical Garden, it has over 2400 roses, I love there! Thanks again

A number of the Austins would make lovely climbers for an arbor that size. I have Crown Princess Margareta on my arbor and Teasing Georgia as a climber on a trellis along the wall of the house (both apricots; nice fruity scent). Brother Cadfael (huge pink blooms, thornless) also does nicely here. One of my absolute favorite Austins that would work as a short climber is Jude the Obscure, beautiful flowers (still flowering now! a yellow blend) and an absolutely amazing scent--even better than Abraham Darby if you can believe it. Pretty light on the thorns too. Strawberry Hill is another pink with a myrrh scent that has a climbing habit in my zone and is always in bloom. And Graham Thomas is a rock-solid reliable yellow that would make a lovely climber for an arbor--rich yellow, with a strong Tea scent. That is a few of my favorite Austins with a climbing habit at present, although there are many more that would be suitable.

Sara-Anne, most of my climbers are once blooming ramblers but I have or had some repeat blooming climbers. This is Rosarium Utersen This is Jazz, VERY vigorous grower This is Lavender Lassie, it's the lighter colored rose on the right. The one one the left is Veilchenblau, a once bloomer. These roses were hardy to almost the tip for me. Meaning not a lot of dieback. Just because the rose says hardy to zone 6 doesn't mean it will be tip hardy, and you won't get that height you need. As for fragrance, Lavender Lassie has a very strong scent. The others had a very slight scent.

I had an arbor with Climbing Pinkie (has the advantage of being thornless) and Climbing Clothilde Soupert on the other side. Boy, do I miss that rose right now. Both are very disease resistant. The lack of fragrance on Climbing Pinkie is made up for by Cl. Clothilde Soupert.

I think its Olga (or was it Lori) who inspired me to grow Etoille de Hollande (the climbing version) in my new TN garden due to its disease resistance.

Well thornless is nice but it doesn't have to be thornless rebloom is more important and hardy in zone 6. I was thinking light pink or white or yellow might also work.. Does climbing pinkie rebloom how tall does it get?? I have alot of pink so maybe a white or yellow but there is too much yellow there aready but still it could work also i guess.

Climbing Pinkie has a rapid rebloom. I think its a climbing polyantha. Its only drawback is lack of scent. I dont know where you are in PA but it was winter hardy in Lancaster. It gets about 10 to 12 feet in our zone but bushy.

I remember going to one garden where the gardener had a sign that said "Welcome to Rose Heaven". He put the climber Pearly Gates on both sides of the arbor so you had to go through the Pearly Gates to get to rose heaven. Corny, but it worked. Pearly Gates is a soft pink with fragrance. It is a sport of the climber America and does reasonably well handling winter.

Viking Queen has frequently been mentioned as a beautiful and hardy pink climber. You might want to check it out.

I would do a white to pick up the color of the shed. What kind of arbor are you going to put up?

I have climbing Sombrieul and it's great, but I don't know how it would do in your zone.

How about a white with the addition of a clematis? I have Sombreuil planted with Niobe and I like the combination very much. I have no idea if Sombreuil is hardy in your area, though.

I was looking at black iron arbors as we will be replacing the wooden fence soon in a year or two with the new vynal white post and rail. We have a dog so we were looking at picket and post and rail with the green wire. The wooden fence is old and falling apart and even though I like the wood look as it is more natural I feel we have white vynal in the front of the house so trying to keep everything even as far as fence color goes. I won't be replacing the fence for another year or two so I feel the black arbor will go with the old and new fence plus match in with the white and black shed. White sounds interesting with the clematis but if we switch to a white post and rail fence then maybe pink is the better option. I was looking at golden showers as a climber but that is yellow so I will have to take a look at some of the pink one's mentioned above.. Thanks for the input!! The shed is my husband's gift and he told me to have fun decorating around it so I am!!!!

I'm not sure about zone 6, but Golden Showers is quite tender in zone 5.

the other side of the shed has antique lace white clematis blooms in the fall. Just giving more ideas of what I already have in the yard. If I go with post and rail or picket white fencing what would look better?? I seem to favor white post and rail.. What are your thoughts??
