Transitioning climbing rose from trellis to arbor?

Hi all,

Upon moving into this house, we inherited a large and vigorous climbing rose that my grandfather anchored to the house over a decade ago -- possibly Cecile Brunner? This spring, the rose seems to have gotten too heavy for the stucco and has popped off the wall. I am reluctant to drill back into the stucco to re-anchor it, as I consider that a losing battle.

My question is: could we put in an arbor and drape the existing growth over it? Would the rose adapt to such a repositioning? I've looked into building a trellis that isn't anchored to the wall, but I think I'd prefer the look of an arbor. Has anyone tried this or faced a similar challenge?

Please forgive the looks of the rest of the garden -- we've had only a few months in the house, and I haven't quite figured out what to do with "Lollipop Tree Lane" back here. The rose is the first step!

I don't think it would have any problems adapting. You may have to prune it back some and then train the new growth as it comes out. But I think it would be very happy with a new support system. I would just caution you that any arbor you get should be a very good quality STRONG one because you're not going to want to have to replace it anytime soon, lol!

Lovely rose by the way! It's hard to tell from that one picture but it does look like it could be Cecil Brunner.

You will have to drill into the wall to support what will have to be a fairly narrow structure....but there are many appropriate fastenings to anchor such a structure in place - from simple joist hangers to a variety of masonry screws. A good drill and the job will be done. Seil is quite right - don't skimp on the quality and strength of a support structure - roses are heavy and wind or rain increase the weight and any instability. I like the path.

For a big pink rose blossoms with fantastic re-bloom I would grow 'Susan Louise' as of April 5, 2013 it is available from vintagegardens.com The blooms are a bit bigger than a tea saucer on a mature sized plant, and are pink and cream. The outer petals are a more saturated pink which gives interest to the blossom. Here in the San Francisco Bay area 'Susan Louise' is one of the most disease resistant of all roses, and never needs spraying. I would not put jackmanni with it on a regular sized arbor, as the rosebush is large enough, but if I wanted to see purple and pink, in spring I'd plant fragrant purple sweet peas with it. I have never seen a photo that has done the plant and the bloom justice, it really is special, floriferous and blooms fully here in winter, as well in the other 3 seasons. Luxrosa

Renee, I think planting a white rose on the arbor goes perfectly with what you already have growing in that area! Jacqueline's suggestions are hard to beat, but I dare to recommend the ordinary Climbing Iceberg. This rose is supposed to be able to take some shade, super easy to grow, flowers very prolifically and repeats well (in my garden 4 stunning flushes in one season!). A number of the Austins would make lovely climbers for an arbor that size. I have Crown Princess Margareta on my arbor and Teasing Georgia as a climber on a trellis along the wall of the house (both apricots; nice fruity scent). Brother Cadfael (huge pink blooms, thornless) also does nicely here. One of my absolute favorite Austins that would work as a short climber is Jude the Obscure, beautiful flowers (still flowering now! a yellow blend) and an absolutely amazing scent--even better than Abraham Darby if you can believe it. Pretty light on the thorns too. Strawberry Hill is another pink with a myrrh scent that has a climbing habit in my zone and is always in bloom. And Graham Thomas is a rock-solid reliable yellow that would make a lovely climber for an arbor--rich yellow, with a strong Tea scent. That is a few of my favorite Austins with a climbing habit at present, although there are many more that would be suitable.

Why, Lori, could you be referring to moi? Happy to step up and oblige!! MusicalMommy, if you're interested in gardening in Calgary, you should investigate the many advantages of joining the Calgary Horticultural Society. I've been a member for several years, and have benefitted from (among other things) the information in their newsletters, their members-only garden tours, their plant exchanges, and (my favourite) discounts at many garden-related businesses. If, like me, you spend more than a little bit at the nurseries each year, your membership fee is paid back several times over with the discounts! I'm not on the executive, and never have been. I volunteer from time to time, for certain events, but I'm generally too busy to even attend their monthly meetings. Still, I've gained a great deal of knowledge, inspiration and confidence from this group, so I'm a big fan. I belong to other specialist plant societies in the city, and benefit from each of them, but the CHS is my favourite. Check out the information in their website and see if the society is right for you. The member section outlines all the member benefits. I don't know if all the passports have been sold out, by now, but you could check into this coming weekend's viewing of the annual garden competition winning gardens. You'd get a lot of inspiration and ideas from those. You don't have to be a member to buy a passport. The information is on the website, but you have to dig a bit (easy for a gardener, eh?) to find all the locations that are selling the passports. ($20 for non-member for the 2 days...with many, many gardens to see.) Welcome to gardening. Enjoy the process and keep dreaming. More is possible than you can imagine, even in our climate. I love the path and think your rose would be very happy on
really nice arbor! Maybe you could make it wide since the path is so narrow giving the rose plenty of room to grow and still give you plenty of bloom..

A length of cattle panel would do very nicely in that narrow space because you can bend it to be tall and narrow. I have transitioned at least one rose (Chevy Chase) from a straight trellis to a cattle panel with no problem at all.
