Reine des Violettes-should I give up?
Comments (27)Well,this thread has by now gotten out of hand,in the sense that it's not really talking about my specific issue anymore, which is OK, of course, but I think I better stop reading it since it's starting to frustrate me. My RdV is a very large,(6 or 7 feet tall) healthy plant, did defoliate with bspot this year, as have many other of my old roses (I'm trying to give up spraying entirely, and the weather has been less dry than usual...),literally, my only gripe with it was it's inability to produce a flush of flowers,it did plenty of buds which just dried out, or opened warped and aborted-looking, with only one or two good flowers. After digging it up,I am not surprised...and I think if anyone other than Ingrid had bothered to read my second post on the subject, they would not be either. If giving the thing decent conditions doesn't work, I'm sp-ing it; I don't want to do" penguins in the desert" either. I understand the thing about own-roots; I tried an own root Chateau de Clos Vougeot, clbg, and in three years it remained 8 inches tall. I decided to try it grafted, and my new one is growing enthusiastically. But I also had a total failure with a grafted Gloire de Dijon; maybe it just got too weakened by the fact that it was growing in overly poor soil for it's first couple years, and just never recovered. Both of the rugosas I tried were grafted, and both failed ( all that grew on Wild Edric was the rootstock). But I see no reason to jump to the conclusions that are being presented here! Kim's and Jeri's comments at the beginning were pertinent......See MoreShould I Give Up on My Enchanted Evening?
Comments (3)There could be a lot of different reasons why your EE isn't thriving. It may have been an unhealthy or weak plant to begin with or it may just not be happy where it is. Or it may not be a rose that is good for your area at all by being too winter tender or by being very susceptible to the particular disease strains where you live. You could try moving it to a different spot or potting it up to see if it improves but chances are it will never really get much better. I've found that usually by the time they've dwindled down to one cane wonders they never really bounce back. If possible, I'd find a rose garden somewhere near you and visit that and see which roses are growing well that you like. Or find a rose society near you where you can talk to people who grow a lot of roses in the same conditions you do. Look for roses that do well in your area and you'll probably be much happier with them....See MoreShould I give up on these rhodies?
Comments (12)I agree with northwoodswis4 that PMJ is pretty much the best of the lot that can successfully grown in most of Alberta. I had one at my last location and it did pretty darn good, though it received too much winter sun that damaged the foliage, so it's best to place these where they're be somewhat shaded from winter sun and also not exposed to strong winds, though they really are rather tough plants compared to other varieties. I think I'll track one down this spring, as I have the perfect spot!...See Moreshould i give up on my wsown salvia?
Comments (4)Your planting mix looks more coarse than I might have guessed but I still think something isn't right with developing roots, something not making them happy. Do you feel the drainage is OK in those cups, they aren't holding too much water for too long (since salvia likes fast drainage, soils that don't stay continuously moist). Good drainage, lots of sun. After two months, a little fertilizer wouldn't hurt. If you have a product that dissolves in water, I'd use approx. 1/4 the strength as suggested on the package, or at least diluted by half. They do look tiny for planting out in August depending on your climate, but something with their present growing conditions isn't working for them....See MoreRelated Professionals
