Climbing Rose and Clematis for an trellis over a gate

I have a trellis over a garden gate in a brick wall that leads to a pretty sitting area. I am planning a cottage garden bed here. I would really like to grow a rose and a clematis on the arbor. I was thinking Zepherine Drouhin and Jackmanii mainly because I had that at my previous house. However it was somewhat in shade there and while the clematis took off, the zepherine never had a big bloom. But the flowers when they bloomed smelled so wonderful. I also liked the fact that the foliage was lush and there were no thorns. My current arbor has more sun. DH wants a big bloom. I am wondering if Zepherine would do better here? Or perhaps I should do two different climbers and clematis pairings on either side that would bloom in different months? Any ideas or suggestions for me?

Why not try 'Yellow Sweetheart, CL' with your 'Jackmanii' clematis? It's also thornless. The flowers are small, but personally, I like the contrast of small flowers with big flowers better than two big flowers (rose + clematis). Look at the pic below from HelpMeFind to see how they go together.

I'll soon be receiving the climber Annie Laurie McDowell after reading here many times what a wonderful rose it is. Thornless, intensely fragrant, a prolific bloomer (unlike ZD), lovely flowers and superb health have all been mentioned, and it may fit your needs to. Burlington Roses has been rooting cuttings for people who are interested, and I don't know of any other source at this time.

karin, I had the large umbrella trellis with a Teasing Georgia on it. If I were you I would go to Home Depot and get some of the rebar stakes and put those in the ground next to it to help with support. A post up the middle might be a good idea too, if you are going to grow the rose outside of the 'tube'. Also I would spray the entire thing, including the screws with rust proofing spray paint before assembling it. What happened to my trellis is that the joint of two sections rusted out where they were screwed together and that weakened the structure and it literally snapped off at the base in a strong wind. The make up of the trellis is thin at the base and wide at the top. Add the weight of a large climber to it and you can have problems. Also don't let you rose get too overgrown so that it is too top heavy. New Dawn is one of those roses that can get big. Maybe in your zone, it won't be that much of a problem.

Oh my gosh! I tried to get "Pearly Gates" earlier from RU and it wasn't available! As a matter of fact, I posted a question on the forum asking people to compare Pearly Gates to Compassion because I couldn't decide which to get. The question was "Pearly Gates or Compassion?" and some posters initially thought I was asking whether to SP a rose (send it to the "pearly gates"!) or save it ("compassion") - it was pretty funny! Anyway, I ended up getting Compassion and Polka instead but I think I may have to put ol' Pearly Gates back on the list after seeing yours (that America looks pretty good to me, too, hmmmmmm) Beautiful clematis and sure wish they grew here! Lala - the pink rose you circled in the pic is 'Climbing American Beauty' (which is a seedling, NOT a sport of 'American Beauty', and not related to 'Miss American Beauty'. Cl American Beauty (1909) is once blooming, but it blooms very prolifically for a month or so, and then there is scattered bloom for more months on new growth. HMF says it is hardy to zone 5, as it is a Wichurana hybrid. Vaporvac - in Elaine's first pic, the purple rose is Kim Rupert's 'Lauren', and the peach colored rose is Peach Drift (this one is a tree rose which Lauren is eating!). Mary, this is a very good question. If this is your first clem, I want to caution you about the fragility of the stems. Once bent, they may not recover, so leaving them attached to the nursery stake may help prevent that. Some are super hard to remove. Also, even though the stems at the base may be brown or gray and look dry, they're not dead. There are lots of green stems and leaves attached to the dry, brown stem, farther up. You are no doubt a lot smarter than I am, but I learned that the hard way by cutting out all the parts I thought were dead, only to find I had cut off all the new growth.

Are you anywhere near the coast? If you are, I would not plant ZD. It is a mildew magnet here - No SF Bay, about 4 blocks from the Bay. It was pure white, really, even with spraying.

Christopher --> the yellow rose does look like a sweetheart. Is this fragrant? I am open to other clematis besides Jackmanii for this arbor. I bought jackmanii earlier as it was the only clematis at my local garden center.

Annie Laurie McDowell sounds wonderful. I love the look of the rose .. very english cottage. How would you describe the fragrance?

Jacqueline --> I am nowhere near the coast. Well inland in the peninsula/ southbay area. Mildew was occasionally a problem in my zepherine but I was must closer to the bay then.

According to what I've read (I won't know for myself since mine is coming this month), 'Yellow Sweetheart, CL' is considered "strongly fragrant." 'Annie Laurie McDowell' is also coming here this year. If you can't find that one available, consider its less-double parent 'Renae'. All three are thornless climbers. Check them out by entering their names in the HelpMeFind link below. Oh, and if you go with another clematis, consider something dark red like 'Niobe' which would look stunning with any of the three mentioned. If you want to see 'Niobe', go to the HelpMeFind search and select "Clematis" instead of "Roses."

For a big pink rose blossoms with fantastic re-bloom I would grow
'Susan Louise' as of April 5, 2013 it is available from vintagegardens.com

The blooms are a bit bigger than a tea saucer on a mature sized plant, and are pink and cream. The outer petals are a more saturated pink which gives interest to the blossom. Here in the San Francisco Bay area 'Susan Louise' is one of the most disease resistant of all roses, and never needs spraying.
I would not put jackmanni with it on a regular sized arbor, as the rosebush is large enough, but if I wanted to see purple and pink, in spring I'd plant fragrant purple sweet peas with it.
I have never seen a photo that has done the plant and the bloom justice, it really is special, floriferous and blooms fully here in winter, as well in the other 3 seasons.
