Separation Anxiety

I'm sure this is old hat to most of you but this past week I have separated the suckered growth on Precious Dream and Reine de Violettes. I think that they have developed sufficient roots to make it on their own and it seems like the dormancy of winter would be the best time to cut the apron strings but it always makes me a little anxious to do this. After looking at your little sucker and your description of everything you've done, I'd say you have very little to worry about. Roses are tough and want to live and with all that TLC I'm sure they'll flourish. I did the same thing with Damask of Glendora and ended up with about five new roses, some of which I gave away to some very happy friends.

Thanks Ingrid. I whole heartedly agree with you about the joy of giving roses to others. That is one of the reasons I have tried to learn everything I could about propagating roses this past year.

cindyandmocha, I honestly wasn't referring to your post at all. I completely got what you were trying to convey and I totally agree. Something else about crating people often don't understand is it should never be used for punishment. It's supposed to be their safe haven, like a bedroom would be for a child. Punish them to it and they will not enjoy being there. We don't punish our dog. We use positive reinforcement instead and as a result we'll often find her relaxing in her crate. We seldom ever close the door, but when we do, she still doesn't mind. I think it really helped to make her feel secure in her new home. She was one of 11 so very used to company and we ended up having to bring her home at the young age of 6 weeks. From day one the crate has been her spot and she never cried once for her mother or siblings, not even at night. She also gets a little put out when the cat decides to give the crate a try. She knows it's hers and likes that. But I do have to say, she doesn't sleep with us unless we crash downstairs on a Saturday night. She sleeps downstairs and we're upstairs. If you have more then one pet, it does seem to help. Our cat seems to fill any void she'd have if she were alone instead. I don't believe that one style will fit all. Our dog is a Lab, very even tempered and eager to please. The techniques we used may not work well with another breed or dog. You sort of have to customize each technique to fit your situation.

OMG, I went through this with my little Tubby and I know how you feel. Mine was in a shelter, in a damaged cage next to his sibling. Both were deposited at the same time. When I brought the little fellow home, I was not prepared for what happened. He would not let me out of his sight for an instant. I had to put him in the car, drive back to town and get him a crate so I could bring him up to work because he mutilated himself if I was out of sight. He only stopped crying long enough to chew his tail to the bleeding point. My husband was out of state and thankfully I owned my business and it was on my property, so up to the greenhouses he would come with me. It continued, I could not go from one structure to the other without him chewing at the metal bars to the point of injury. I did just exactly as Justplaincountry said she did. He had to learn that when I was out of sight, I would return. I told him to be a 'good boy' and did the come and go routine for days, extending the time by a minute or two. Then when hubby came back he was tolerating ten or twenty minutes and we took turns being inside with him or taking him on leash to 'visit' the other. Even a month or two later we were afraid of his anxiety level if we went for more than an hour or two, so we dropped him off at our daughter' house nearby to socialise with her pooches. We used to do the same for her dogs. The moment of truth came later that summer when my cousin died and we went to her services. It was four hours and that didn't even include staying for the wake. When we got home, he was fine and has been ever since. They just need to know you'll be back. I suppose this has something to do with trusting another human who never did come back. God only knows what they went through in a previous life. I believe mine was treated well. He came trained, healthy and with manners. Somebody broke his heart.

Thanks for the thoughts and ideas. I think I just needed to sort through my own thoughts and "get a grip." The loss of Beauty and now Sawyer has been taking its toll on me. She probably will have a better time than we will!! I like that thought. As far as taking her with us, I would in a heartbeat if I could . . . she travels with us every weekend to our lake house and to any other place we believe she will be comfortable. This weekend involves hotels, nursing homes and 2-3 different houses. It's going to be stressful on us, let alone on her. You're right, tho, it's not a true family event without the whole family!

My 15 year old dog had some of the same issues. I think it is a combination of senility and pain. Panting is a sign of pain in dogs. Senility can cause anxiety. About my dog: At about 14, she forgot how to drink water from her bowl. Seriously. I tried every type of bowl, raised it, lowered it, whatever. I ended up having to give her water by using a needleless syringe and squirting it into her mouth. I also could put a cup or so of water in with her food and she drank that fine. Weird. She was also restless at night. Pacing, panting. I think from general confusion, (senility), and probably pain. I had her on deramaxx for arthritis. When that seemed to stop helping, I switched to steroids. Normally I would not put a dog on constant steroids, but at her age, it wasn't like I had to worry about long term effects. I also gave tramadol - twice a day. Increased to 3 times a day towards the end. I think that just like when people get old, old dogs do not need as much sleep/cannot sleep well at night. Think about how many old people get by on 5 hours a night. Part of that may be because they sleep a lot during the day, just like dogs do. Just a theory. Anyway, I would consider switching to steroids for the arthritis, and giving your dog an extra tramadol at bedtime. Good luck, I know it is heartbreaking. My Maggie would get "stuck" too. Behind doors due to senility, or on slippery areas (tile, wood laminate), because she didn't have the muscles in her back legs to be able to get up :( And, I'm very sorry about your daughter Jill. I know the pain of losing a child never goes away.

I don't have any roses that I've separated through suckering, but I've sure hovered and babied rose cuttings. I'm always so happy a new plant has grown from a stick. That's such an amazing thing to me, still. I like your blog. I hope the Prague-ites enjoy the roses you and your wife are growing in the park and that your rose club flourishes. Are you planting tea and china roses too?

This past year the work in the Prague Rose Garden has been primarily first year work of reestablishing the bed and putting in young plants. I hope this next year the garden will begin to put on a bit of a show which could attract a little more attention from people in the community.

I have grown teas here before but they just can't take the cold. We are really on the boundary of zones 6 and 7. This year however we have only had a couple of nights down in the teens. I have not ever tried any Chinas. Any suggestions?

hmm. You're colder than I thought. So, well, I'm probably not someone that can help a whole lot as I haven't grown chinas in a 7a/6b zone. There is a poster from around Tulsa that grows a lot of teas and chinas, though. If you do a posting asking for info on "Chinas and Teas in Oklahoma" or somethingorother like that, she might see or answer your query.

My favorites of what I've grown are Spice, Cramoisi Superieur and Ducher but they are all rated 7b. Two others I've grown and like, Perle d'Or and Jean Bach Sisley are rated to 6b, I think. Old Blush is rated in the 6's also, I think.

In your pictures on the blog those look like pretty good size healthy plants in their own right so I don't think you should have any problem with separating them.

I'm in zone 6 and I'm going to try to grow a tea but I don't think I'd push to a china. Although a lot of people on here have said I could grow Mutabilis and I just may try it too.

Still learning about all this stuff and I just wanted to clarify. The original plants were own-root, correct? You wouldn't be able to do this if they were grafted, would you? Thanks!

I don't have much experience with propagation except for rooting tips - my Mme Legras de St Germain has very long arching canes, and about 12 years go, before pruning it to a more manageable dimenstion (she was trying to eat the deck) I pegged down a few of the canes - literally with old wooden clothespins - piled on some small rocks, and voila, the next spring had rooted new plants.
Very easy to do.

zaphod42 - You are right. Mine are own-root roses and if you have a sucker growing on a grafted rose you would want to discard it as it would be a plant of your rootstock.

sunnyside - I have also propagated roses from layering as you described. That was the first way I successfully propagated a rose. I think it is pretty amazing how roses can be propagated in so many differant ways.
