Believe it or not, decent looking ceiling fans exist. On every design show I've ever seen they're the first things to be thrown out, but I have them in every bedroom. Mmm slight draft at night without the sound of floor fan... I pspent no fewer than 18 weeks looking (off and on) for a "pretty" one to go in my master. I have lived with a 4 poster bed. My experience - unless you have really high ceilings, and I'm talking like 10 ft, and a sizeable room, it will turn your space into... tiny. Once upon a time in a previous life I thought I had a big bedroom until I put a poster bed in there. I like your computer nook. I always wanted a space like that, which I could separate from the rest of the room with some romantic drapery tied back. I might force that idea on my formal dining room. :) beds/headboards coverin ga window do bother me. I don't like anything to cover a window (couch, table, or otherwise) -- but that's just me. And if it came down to a queen bed, or covering that window, sure - the window would get covered! We have single panels on our two bedroom windows, mostly because they're skinny and it looked silly to me to have two panels. If you need to cover the window, something that seems to help (at least when I've seen it done) is to pull the bed away from the wall a foot or so. Then you can go with two panels, and it looks kind of intentional instead of "didn't have space." Something else to keep in mind with blocking windows -- does the sun come directly in such that it would fade your bedding over time?

Hi Sweeby. You're absolutely right: the style & material of this fireplace don't go with a stone wall, even if that wall is only a thin veneer of fake stone. On the other hand, since the fireplace is also clearly fake--real fireplaces don't sit on wooden pedestals, and most fake fireplaces are way too small, anyway--it may all go together just fine & look lovely, at least in your client's mind, which is all that counts. Now, I'm totally with you on the idea that a good room is more than the sum of its individual parts, and what really counts is the overall look of thee room, but she's hiring you to create the look she wants, not what you know to be appropriate. After all, if she were really interested in the aesthetics, or the issue of suitability, she'd take a History of Design class. But she isn't, so she isn't. She just wants you to make her dream a reality. If your relation to her is a little unclear, put the relationship in the realm of food, not design: you're a waiter, not the chef. She's calling the shots. One time an architectural instructor--a Functionalist, clearly--noticed some unnecessary ornament in a student's designs for a hypothetical client. He pointed out the offending curves & asked "And exactly what is the function of this?" to which the student replied "well, the function of that is to please the client." That's kind of where you are. Marshall Field, the founder of what was the most beautiful department store in America was a huge success because he catered to the whims of his lady customers, no matter how silly they might have been. One time he caught one of his employees trying to explain logically to a custoimer why he felt that what she had asked for was not the best choice for her. Field jusyt sailed past & said "Give the lady what she wants." Anyway, that's you & your friend. This is why I never work for my pals. They're great people, but let's just say that my taste & their taste are not in agreement, and while it's great when clents become friends, when friends become clients, it's asking for trouble. That's why I always tell my pals no, I can't help them. Actually, I don't put it like that. I just explain my fee structure, and then they tell me to forget it. Works every time. I did that in my guest room - no problem at all. The carpet is pretty low pile and the rug is a fairly thick sculpted type oriental. I have no pad under the rug. I also have a very short, dense wool oriental rug on the carpet in my living room. That also works fine. I have all these rugs on carpet because I moved from a house with wood floors to one with more carpet. I hope to get rid of the carpet someday when I feel like moving everything again. So then I will need the rugs and in the meantime I can't stand the plain beige carpet. In another room I have a thick wool runner that covers the width of carpet from the deck door to the wood floor in the dining area. It has no furniture on it that holds it in place so it ripples a bit. I need to find a way to keep it flat.

Like it. Also like the smaller pattern you used for your backsplash. Would not want "texture" over or around a wood burning fireplace as it will almost inevitably catch smoke particles and be difficult to keep clean -- textured stone certainly was. Something to consider might be to use the pattern directly over the fireplace and metal surround but use a solid color from it for the <1' wide side columns to frame it, especially if your mantel will not span the full width of the wall.
