Surrounding the Fireplace with Texture
This marked our first chilly week here in Atlanta and thus it's the first week I stoked a fire in my fireplace (O.K. that's an exaggeration, it's gas, but I do have to light a match...). Inspired by the warmth, I wound up amassing so many favorite photos of beautiful fireplaces that it was too much for one ideabook; instead I'll make it a mini-series over the next few weeks. What's jumping out at me today is the variety of textures on fireplaces, hearths and surrounds. Let's take a look!
This room has a great balance of textures–the gray/brown stone of the fireplace surround also serves as an accent wall.
A fireplace surround tiled in these tiles from Heath Ceramics is my number one dream fireplace. They are unique and timeless.
This stone fireplace and the paneled walls are the same color, but the rough texture of the stone makes the fireplace stand out.
I can't help but add this stunning marble chimney to any ideabook that has to do with fireplaces. It's just so warm and beautiful. It's such an elegant material, but its colors work so well with the rustic chic style of the room.
The wavy lines of this textured fireplace reflect light and cast subtle shadows in this glass box loft.
Here's a closer look at the texture from the photo above.
These long slim tiles have a pattern that creates modern vertical lines.
WOW! I have never come across anything like this before. Black is a big commitment, but this chimney is the piece de resistance in this glamorous library.
This fireplace surround is the updated and polished version of an industrial cinder block chimney.
The designer here has chosen a stark and simple concrete fireplace surround, then warmed it up via the natural light, wood tones on the floor and furniture. Upholstered pieces and an area rug softens it up. Bravo!
This tumbled stone is a prairie style element that has been made more contemporary by emphasizing horizontal lines and playing with scale.
When one decides to clad a tall fireplace in copper, it dominates the room. Here it is balanced by high ceilings, glass and light walls.
This marble surround is absolutely surreal. Doesn't it make you wonder where in the world they dug up that piece of stone?
This textured pass-through fireplace wall serves double duty as a room divider.
