Design Details: Tiled Fireplace Surrounds
Give the Hearth a Beautiful Finish With Colorful Glass, Ceramic or Classic Stone Tile

Houzz Contributor. Hi there! I live in a 1940s cottage in Atlanta that I'll describe as "collected."
I got into design via Landscape Architecture, which I studied at the University of Virginia.

Sometimes the options for fireplace design seem absolutely limitless. A few weeks ago I started an ideabook about surrounding the fireplace with texture and realized that tile fireplace surround needed an ideabook of its own, as it is an entire subcategory with endless options. Here are some of the choices Houzz designers have settled upon:
This glass tile surround makes this fireplace worthy of being the room's focal point. Don't be afraid to choose an unexpected color. This blue tile goes with just about anything.
Here a stripe of accent tile draws the eye up and provides a strong vertical element in the room.
These small green tiles are a great contrast to the light mantel and chocolate walls.
Arts and Crafts Era homes often included a tile border, as well as carved wood details and built-in bookshelves flanking the fireplace. If it's Craftsman style you are going for, a tile detail on the fireplace is a good choice.
Here the tile serves as an implied chimney but doesn't actually take up any valuable bathroom space. Without this design move, the actual fireplace would just be a floating box in the wall and the scale would be way off.
We're not limited to small tiles here. This fireplace is surrounded by large square stone tiles.
This bold tile design draws attention to the fireplace.
Square checks in shades of green are a little bit country. The print on the chair makes it a little bit of rock and roll. (Sorry, but Marie Osmond has been in the press a lot lately, and that was my favorite Donnie and Marie song of all time).
This white matte tile is subtle, and the interest comes from the texture.
These stone tiles provide the palette for the entire room.
Technically this isn't the direct fireplace surround, but I can't seem to do a fireplace ideabook without adding this Heath Ceramics chimney.
This gorgeous glass tile flows from the fireplace around the tub.
Even the thinnest border of tile in a surround packs a punch. Here this accent just the right amount.
Look carefully at this one and check out the way the tile next to and above the fireplace opening relates to the hearth—it's very clever!
