BedRoom: Area Rug on Carpeted Floor and Under the Bed

Hi there, I am looking to put an area rug under my bed to add some color/pattern to the room. But i have a carpeted floor. Wondering if the rug would get crumpled into the carpet under the weight of the bed. Does rug-over-carpet felt pads help? if so are there any recommendations on which ones to use? Appreciate any pointers.

I thought about doing this in my bedroom, but decided I didn't want an additional layer to have to vacuum on top of the carpet. If you do add a rug, you might try placing it towards the foot of the bed so that more of the pattern is visible. I think this can be a nice look.

It can be done but often not very satisfactorily.

My daughter did it with a huge oriental and it looks fantastic, she never put a pad under it.

First of all, if you like what you are using now, try to solve the problem before purchasing a new vacuum cleaner. The Hoover WT will clean thick carpeting very well. There are a few things that could be happening. First, the rug that you put down may have a plastic backing. This would seal the rug. When your vacuum runs over this rug, there is no where for the air to pull through the rug. The Hoover then becomes "stuck" to the rug. The same would happen if you put down a rug on a flat floor without a pad. You said that you put these rugs over your wall to wall, so the WTW would act as padding. Does your Hoover have the same sealing issue when you vacuum the WTW? It most likely does not. Also, since you are smelling rubber, your belt is slipping. When was the last time you changed the belt? Put on a fresh genuine belt, then lower the height of the vacuum just enough to hear a change in air movement and vibration from the brushroll. I can recommend some vacuum cleaners, but I would rather wait until you have tried what I suggested first.

Stain under area rugs?????

We bought our first home two years ago. The sellers did not disclose that the hardwoods in both the living room and the dining room were stained and damaged. The also did not disclose that the cellar leaks every time it rains (they claimed it leaked once). We did hire a reputable inspector, but these things were not discovered. During the walk-through the day before closing, we discovered the badly damaged floors. We tried to negotiate a deal, but they refused claiming they already made too many concessions to us. Well, we were stuck with no place to live so we went ahead with the purchase. I feel like it was bait and switch. We tell everyone we know how un-honest the sellers realtor was. We will certainly be more careful in the future.

Placing area rug on carpet

We have new w/w carpeting, and I want to put an area rug under the coffee table area. The rug comes with a cut-to-fit pad to go under it, made to protect hardwood floors and further cushion the rug. I don't have any place to put the pad, so can it go under the rug, between the w/w carpet and the back of the area rug? It has a rubbery side made not to slip on hardwood floors. Thanks.

The size should be based on what is correct for your room. It was hard to find a rug that matched your bedskirt, so selecting one with blue to contrast the bedskirt seemed an easier task. Love those linens. Would you mind telling where you purchased them?

I did it with a big new rug. Works fine.

I did that in my guest room - no problem at all. The carpet is pretty low pile and the rug is a fairly thick sculpted type oriental. I have no pad under the rug. I also have a very short, dense wool oriental rug on the carpet in my living room. That also works fine. I have all these rugs on carpet because I moved from a house with wood floors to one with more carpet. I hope to get rid of the carpet someday when I feel like moving everything again. So then I will need the rugs and in the meantime I can't stand the plain beige carpet.

In another room I have a thick wool runner that covers the width of carpet from the deck door to the wood floor in the dining area. It has no furniture on it that holds it in place so it ripples a bit. I need to find a way to keep it flat.

Thank you - very helpful. My carpet is not low pile. Am looking at a rug that is .375 pile. And i plan to use felt pad as well as caster cups under the legs of the bed. Hope that works!

Why would you want to cover an area rug by putting it under a bed? What sizing bed ar you talking about and what size rug?

King bed. And 8x11 area rug. Rug will show 2 feet around the bed. The room is very dull with no color - brown wooden bed, ivory wall, beige carpeted floor. The rug will add some color/pattern to the bed room

FWIW, I'd start by bringing in color with curtains, bedding and art. Without those items, I don't think just adding color to the floor is going to make much of a difference.

@IdaClaire - thank you, the picture was super helpful. That's exactly the look i was shooting for. Shades of brown on furniture/fabric/wall hanging and then a layered rug with little color around the bed. I will go for placing rug towards the foot of the bed, great idea
