Coping with mental health system
Comments (3)zzeasy, Unfortunatly, mental health facilities are always difficult to deal with. HIPPA laws are not new but were revised to be much stricter about 5 years ago. I am a resource coordinator for elderly and disabled folks. I have to have a HIPPA consent form for every client to allow me to discuss health issues etc. even though I am only trying to find help for them. My Husbands Dr. cannot discuss my husband with me, but I have a client that sees the same Dr. I can discuss her health with him because I have that signed form. If your adult daughter dosen't want you knowing about her mental health issues, there is nothing you can do. Try to convinse her to sign a consent form as an emergency contact person, then at least you can give your input to her Drs. God Luck, I feel for ya. Comments (16)Whenever you get something in an email, it's best to assume it's FALSE until proven true. Especially if it has FWD or FW in the subject! It generally takes less time to verify it's a hoax than it takes to send the email to everyone in your address book. If it says they checked it with Snopes, CNN or God, it's a pretty safe bet they didn't. And if it said something like "send this to everyone you know...", DON'T! It's also a good idea to educate the person who sends you this spam. I cannot understand why people give email such absolute gospel-level of credibility on the most incredible things. Bill Gates WON'T pay you to send emails, nor will AOL; there's no bill to tax emails (though there should be); there is nobody who was charged $250 for a cookie recipe; there's no kidney theft ring working hotels and the Nigerian General WON'T make you a millionaire. (He promised that to me!) I've thought it would be interesting to test a theory: Send out an email telling everyone to stand in the middle of the road, flap their arms and cluck like a chicken at high noon on Christmas Day or the troops will not have underwear for two months. Just add that I checked it out and it's true. I wonder how many roads would be blocked by crowds? I suspect that many roads would would be impassable. Email hoaxes are a virus of their own. They tie up bandwith and cause trouble the world over. They cost people and companies money. Please don't feed the spammers....See MoreSelf-care: What are your favorite practices for good mental health?
Comments (30)How do I stay mentally healthy and centered? I recognize that I am an introvert (not shy) and take my down time when needed, I run or hike daily with a group of women who believe in the adage that what is said on the trails stays on the trails which allows for a lot of freedom in our conversations. We run in the North Shore mountains in trails that go on forever and we stop for the beauty of seeing the sun coming through the trees or drops of water on leaves or the different colours of moss on/hanging from trees. We laugh if we're soaking wet at the end of running in a rainstorm. and think we're adventurous if we're climbing over downed trees after a windstorm and think we're rebels when we pass that sign that says trail closed due to weather conditions. I watch what I eat but allow for throwing caution to the wind and eating something that isn't "healthy." I have turned off the running news but will watch the conclusions of the days events. I walk my son's golden regularly and up until last Thursday also walked my niece's Sheba regularly until we had to say goodbye to him. I have been known to get rid of people in my life that aren't good for me including a sister and my MIL. Could I do more? Perhaps, but I'm not disciplined enough....See Morearticle- How reading can impact your mental health
Comments (25)That's an incredible setting! Thank you for sharing that. (if you don't mind- where is this? it's ok if you'd prefer not to answer) I have always been a reader, and it's funny that my kids (lol my baby is 37) tell me that they remember me always sitting or lying on the couch and reading. Often when I couldn't concentrate on books, it was magazines. I would say for the past 20 years or so I have become an avid reader. I will read all sorts, even what is maybe considered a bit on the junk side , but I like a variety . What I find lately especially since I've been retired, is that if I start my day with reading a book (kindle is my preferred), I have a sense of accomplishment in addition to feeling calm. I feel that it's a constructive activity. I spend LOT of time on the computer here and browsing all sorts of sites and emailing of course. I don't consider it a waste, but I don't consider it a constructive use of time. I've tried, at different times, to do meditaion or mindfulness, and I did find it soothing but I just can't seem to relax or get out of my head enough. I know it's very valid . I recall my mother doing TM for probably 10 or so years, and it was incredible how much it helped her. I was really impressed to read the articles, and I am so glad that it resonated as well with so many of you....See More- 14 days ago
