Over wintering plants
Comments (3)Hi Gail. I've overwintered iris in my pond for 6 years now and am much colder than you. Have also overwintered both iris and pickeral rush by burying the plant pot and all in the flowerbed next to the house and covered area with dirt then peat moss as well. Just make sure you remove all the peat moss before digging out the plant in the spring. If the water lily is a hardy and your garage is unheated just put the plant pot and all in a black garbage bag in the garage. Check it every now and then to make sure it is still wet. Have also overwintered lilies in their pot in a laundry tub full of pond water in the cold room in the basement. They did just fine. If it's a tropical lily then you'll have to remove the tuber from it's pot bag it and store it in the fridge. I believe the fiber optic is a tropical. I have one too and am going to try overwintering it in the house in it's pot set in water treated like a house plant. I overwintered water cannas in a vase full of pea gravel and just made sure it had water and it overwintered well. Same with parrot feather which didn't do as well but may have needed a sunnier location. Hope this helps. Patti...See MoreGomphrena seed collection
Comments (4)Yes I save seed. You will normally find the flower heads that are yellowing on the bottom have formed seed. You can feel it when the flower heads flake off from the bottom. Gomphrena seed needs light to germinate, so it's best on top of the soil. Colours I grow are Strawberry Fields, Carmine, Orange, White, Pale Pink, Lavendar and Purple. Aggie Maroon ones ???? I've not heard of those..... Cheers Kim - BFFF...See MoreRecovering worn/faded wicker furn cushions.
Comments (5)Blondie, There is no reason you cannot recover your cushions. Do they fit the chairs nicely? I often find that replacement cushions do not fit as well so I tend to make my own. What type of cushion is it? Can you post a photo? You will need a sunbrella type fabric. They are available online and at most fabric stores. Comments (23)Ycloh1, I'm afraid I've managed to damage a Crassula Buddhas Temple that I recently acquired. It was a cutting that had very small root nubs beginning when I got it. I potted it up and it was initially doing well but when I looked the other day, one side of it was dried out looking. I think what may have happened is that even though it was on my table under the umbrella, as the seasons change from Summer to Fall, the sun's position in the sky is changing so that where once the sun was more overhead, it is now at more of an angle so the umbrella is offering less protection. The sun is hitting from the side. I think my Buddhas Temlle got direct sunlight at the peak time of the day and was burned. Anyway, I unpotted it and there appear to be no living roots. Some of the fine roots that formed appear to be dead. Have you tried this water culture method on any Crassula? I'm not sure whether I should just clean it up of the apparently dead roots and remove some of the lower leaves and set aside to callous and form new roots or whether I should try this water culture method. Thank you for any advice offered. Tyler...See More- last year
