Landscaper botched sod installation, how to fix?
Comments (9)The guy is not a landscaper - he's an opportunist. I would report him to any and all better business bureau type lists you have in town. If your state has licensing requirements, find his license number on his truck or your invoice and report him to the state agency that issues and reissues the licenses. 20 years experience is measured in many ways. Sounds like he has 1 years experience, twenty times...if that. He does have 20 years experience getting paid, though. That is evident in his knowledge of the written contract and with threats. You might try to negotiate with him. Make him understand that unless he makes this right, you will report him to every BBB list (there are some Internet based lists, too). What he needs to do will be very costly to him. He should remove the turf (and use it somewhere else immediately), level the soil surface, roll it down, relevel the surface, water it down, relevel the surface, roll it, relevel, roll it again, and then sod with a final rolling. I would not expect him to agree to anything like that. He will offer to roll it down but that won't fix it. What you might get him to agree to is lifting the sod, leveling with a drag, relaying the sod, and THEN rolling the grass down. That is what I would expect from a budget guy who tilled the soil before laying the sod. You might have to pay him more, but you really should have gone with someone else (probably more expensive) the first time. And you are correct in that it will be bumpy again as time goes on. In a way you would be much MUCH better off if he did repossess the sod. Then you could start over. But that timing sure sucks for the Derby....See MoreChips in faux stone fireplace - what binder? Comments (3)Two ides for you: Pick up some One Pass at Home Depot. It's an engineered cement. You could add some of your colorant to it if you like. Mix a small quantity with a little water and fill the voids. After it dries you could wipe it down with a damp rag or sand it smooth. Second, get a quart of deep base water based paint. Don't have any colorant added. Mix a small amount of the untinted paint with your pigment until it has enough opacity to cover your patches. Use a small amount of paint on a dry brush to feather colors together....See MoreHELP! How do I fix Stone Veneer panels mistake by Contractor?
Comments (5)The cinder block wall should of had a "scratch coat" applied prior to setting the stones. A pre-mixed mortar designed specifically for veneer stone must be used. This same mortar is to be used on the stone backing itself. The scratch coat once applied, should be run over with a large notched tile trowel to produce grooves which allow the wall stone to have a better bond. We prefer using the individual natural stones rather than a panel system. It's like a giant puzzle. We just completed a pool project with a 32" raised wall section 40' long. I can post a photo when I'm able. I can see the appeal with a panel system to speed the installation, but I can venture there are a few doubles of the same panels and the wall begins to look artificial. Just my opinion....See MoreNeed ideas on how to renovate a stone fireplace built
Comments (10)I know what will fix a lifeless fireplace...hang a wreath of dead stuff on it. Ummm... Leave it alone, and certainly don't lime wash it, not with the use it clearly gets. That smoke stain will show up even more. Besides, that stone is laid beautifully and makes a major statement. The mason took a lot of care laying that stone, and $20 worth of lime wash would desecrate it. This ain't a McMansion. The home needs to be respected for what it is, and it's clearly significant. Mr_pither has the right idea. But I'd flip that print over so that smada lesna's name could be read better. ;-) Actually, I don't think I'd hang a print or painting there because of the soot. But a sculptural piece would be nice. Do NOT buy anything from a décor store--that cheap sweatshop "wall art" junk has no place there. Look around for a local artist....See Moremillworkman
