Paint Colors - Help!

I’m not gifted at all, when it comes to selecting the right paint color. The paint never seems to match the swatches. We once painted our walls several times until we found the right shade of cream! 😏

We just installed a metal arbor outside, and the plan is to grow vines. I really want to paint it green, but I can’t find the right shade. I understand that the color will look different painted on metal vs wood.

Please help!

Attached is a picture I love. I got the swatch and matched the paint, but it looks more light grey when painted on metal. I really want more of a green.

I agree Nantucket Gray might work. You likely already know colors can lighten up quite a bit on the exterior.

When we remodeled my Dad‘s house, he paired Taj with SW Accessible Beige. It looked terrific in the main rooms with more natural light. In a few rooms with much less natural light, we used a half formula of the same color. It‘s a nice neutral that provides a great flexible backdrop for a mixture of warms and cools in the furnishings. He has mostly warm neutral furnishings with touches of cooler tones. About a 70/30 mix I think.

What colors do you like? It’s a nice two story arts and crafts house/ that was a time that focused on honest materials. Thus red brick. Therefore I would paint the stucco and any other cement items that are painted (I can’t tell if the sills and wall caps are painted or natural, if natural match that) a color like burlap from Ralph Lauren- it looks like sandstone or natural stucco. Then you are left with windows and trim. Do you want to paint all the remaining elements a Tudor brown? Cream? Olive trim with burgundy window sashes?

I also like the white, but if you really want to have a contrasting color I'm picturing something the color of toast (yellow-gold-beige). I'm not familiar with Behr colors so I can't make an exact recommendation. As L.D. Johnson says, it does depend on what colors you have in rooms people can see when in this space.

Painting the siding a dark color makes the house look top heavy above the light colored stone. I get the impression your stone has a lot of golden warm tones in it, so cooler grays are not really working, IMO. Which of your pix is the closest to reality as far as color goes? Of course, color is in the eyes of the computer screen too. If you can load a pic of your house into some of the major paint company sites, they often have an app that will pick colors based on what is already there.

I had BM Nantucket Gray (HC-111) on my siding on my previous house. It is a lot more green than the name implies. It might suit you. I don't know if you would even have to cut it in half. Also, if it makes you feel better, there is no secret to finding the "right" paint color. The "right" color is in the eye of the beholder. That's why paint companies have hundreds of different colors. The only way to find the "right" one is to sample. The colors definitely look different over large areas than they do on the tiny chips. I have painted three houses top to bottom. Sometimes I find the color I was envisioning on the first try, but it is not unusual to have to try 3-5 different ones, and one room I think I tried at least ten. :-) If you aren't already familiar with Samplize.com, look at their website and order some samples to try to refine your decision process without having to paint samples. When you paint samples, try using a board that you can move around to be able to see the color in different light.

Thanks everyone! Wow. 3 mentions of the Nantucket Gray. I’ll have to try a sample of it now!
