Where is your family room TV? Over Fireplace TV?
Comments (15)I have one over a fireplace, and I love it. the rest of that wall is windows, so it was the only spot. My fireplace is gas, and there are clear guidlines about the clearence from combustibles and the like. There are heat concerns. It's commonly stated that you can't have the TV on when the temp there is 95 degrees. Easy for me to monitor, I just keep the fireplace remote there, sometimes programed to turn off the fire when the area hits that. If the fireplace is woodburning, controling the heat could be a problem and you might simply have to turn the tv off sometimes. I suspect that the 95 is a purely random number, though. Lots of homes get that hot, and we haven't heard many reports in the media about flat screens failing from it. To me, watching the fire or watching the tv are different activities that I rarely want to do at the same time. I love having the fire on for conversation, reading, playing a game, and those are times I'd rather have the TV off anyway. We do burn the fire to take the chill off the room on movie nights, but at a pretty low level. As to veiwing angle: it's about 5 ft above the floor, and the seating is about 12 feet back. It seems a little odd if you are used to a conventional set just inches off the floor, but you quickly adapt. It isn't at all uncomfortable for me or any of my family [so far as anyone has ever mentioned], and the kids and dogs don't block the screen everytime they walk by. Overall, I think its a good solution for many rooms. Just be sure to plan for power and signal up there: you don't want a lot of visible wires....See MoreSmall family room design help!
Comments (6)I agree with having fun. Can you float a sofa facing into the room? Small furniture ('apartment size') will work best. By using an ottoman as a coffee table you will add seating in a pinch. How about a storage ottoman to stash toys in a hurry? What color furniture are you considering? You could go neutral with the sofa and add color with chairs or visa versa. A floor or table lamp will soften the look - are the ceiling lights dimmable? How about a area rug to add comfort? It needs to be large enough for the room. You can have a broadloom remnant from a carpet store cut and bound to your measurements for a modest price. This would be a way to add some color to the room. And I'd lower the art work a few inches. Closer to the height of the TV....See Morefamily room tv nook help!!
Comments (14)Thanks for the great ideas everyone! The wainscoting with camouflaged doors is really clever. Yes, my original plan was to drywall it in and put a low credenza or console table with art or photos on the wall. The front door is on the other side of the arch and I really wanted to create a small closet with access from the arch. We only have one very small closet for the entire main floor and it’s not convenient for coats and shoes when you enter the house. The first contractor thought that might disrupt the arch, but I think I’ll get another opinion because it’s not a load bearing wall. Thanks for the great ideas!...See MoreHELP!!!! Small TV/sitting room furniture layout
Comments (9)Here's a revised layout. Your room, because of the odd size, is all about furniture scale. All of the seating should be low back and not over sized or "puffy". Think a more tailored design with a down dacron wrap cushion with a lush fabric. With a sectional not more than 9'-0" , you will have plenty of space on either side for walk thru. Consider the new Sunbrella or Perennials high performance fabrics for all of the upholstery, these fabrics are wonderful for a family room and indestructible. I have tested them out for a client with catsup and clean up was a dream! Also a smaller scaled sofa facing the fireplace/tv with a console behind, slightly protruding into the dining space to visually create a wider room. That's a low interesting bench in front of the fireplace. Everyone on here always thinks I put too much furniture in a space. I am used to designing NYC apartments where space is at a premium and entertaining is key. This a room for an invitation to relax, read, play games and enjoy your family. Hope this will inspire you!...See MoreHU-787167202
