Comments (23)I would not do it. It puts unnecessary strain on your neck or forces people to lie back like the dead and it's hard enough to teach my kids to not slouch. You might not think the neck thing matters but we all get old .. if we're lucky. It also makes me feel like I'm in a bar, an airport, or a bad restaurant. Sorry, if that offends anyone, it's how I feel and so far all of my clients have agreed without needing any persuasion. But that doesn't mean it's wrong to do it. Only the owner's family needs to like it. To me it's just not that difficult to put the TV to one side with the great adjustable brackets now available. The proper height of a TV is easy to determine, just sit on a couch, look straight ahead, and have someone measure the point you feel comfortable looking at. Perhaps take an average of your family members. If I had to do it, I would at least put the fireplace box tight to the floor, the mantel low, and be able to enclose the TV when not in use. These things are not pretty. It would also help to recess it and tip it downward for better viewing and less reflected light. I was in an Italian restaurant in the 60's called Charlie's that had multiple gas fireplaces recessed into the wall above seated head height. Would that work?...See MoreWhere to put the TV in the family room?

If the TV is too high or the sofa isn't in a good place, you may have to tilt your head up to watch TV--if you are watching a long movie, that can get tiring. I kind of like the TV where it is now. You have a "focal wall" instead of a focal point, so to speak. Depending on the amount of room in that corner, I'd look for a corner TV stand that would make the best use of the space. Right now, with the TV in the corner, everyone sitting on the sectional has a decent view of the screen. If you keep the sectional where it is and mount the TV over the fireplace, at least half of the sectional will be at right angles to the screen and people sitting there would have to turn their heads awkwardly to see it. Not an issue if you only ever have two people watching TV at a time. More of an issue if several people use that room to watch TV on a daily basis....See Moreideal fireplace/TV arrangement for family room
Comments (11)Have you thought about reducing the corners and simplifying this house plan? Here is a hurried attempt at some possibilities. Reduced the jogs and bump ins/outs. One decent size dining area. More of a flow/traffic pattern between master bedroom, closet and laundry (which is to to right of mudroom.) Garage door entering more into mudroom to encourage containment of everyone's things. If you do away with the half bath, using your second bath for kids and guests, there would be more square footage for utility storage or some pantry space. Re-routing the walk way to bedrooms and closing up the great room corner could give you a spot for the tv, or flip and put tv on main wall, fireplace on shorter wall? Ran out of time with kids bedrooms, but I think I would opt for reach in closets, using their placement as a buffer to the great room wall and bathroom. I also would put a closet in your entry and how about an exterior door in your master? Hope this gives you some ideas-...See MoreFamily Room Fireplace - TV over fireplace or put in media center?
Comments (9)Another consideration is convenient seating directed toward tv viewing..close enough ..and with tv mounted low enough to view without having to lay “back” and lookup...to view...sometimes a challenge in a big...tall room...never mind when there are multiple windows allowing a lot of sun shining in your eyes for daytime viewing...See More59 Dodge
