I knew about the hallucinogenic thing. One of the Two Fat Ladies mentioned it in an episode many years ago.

I have never heard of anyone having a nutmeg allergy, but truly anyone can be allergic to anything. I sometimes have weird symptoms after eating that makes me think I have some sort of food allergy, but I cannot figure out what it is. Itchy, swelling throat and mouth is my main problem. I suppose I should have that looked into.

Its good to read that you have found the source of your allergy so you can be careful to avoid it! I do not think I have really ever cooked with nutmeg before. Maybe in a random pie or something. But nutmeg is one of those things that I think I would not miss if left out, unlike stronger spices like cinnamon or clove.

Yikes, and I use it somewhat often. I'd never considered it might be an allergen to anyone. (seed, not a nut even considering is name) Tiny amount but goes into several Italian dishes/sauces. I prefer it to cinnamon most of the time. I'm glad you know what's causing the hives and can avoid it - hopefully. Or if you eat out often, maybe not. I had stress related hives many years ago. And, they itched. The doctor prescribed benadryl that stopped the itching, or at least I think it did - but I was sound asleep so who knows. Really, really made me drowsy and wasn't a good trade-off 😁

Are you allergic to mace as well (this is the casing of the nutmeg)? That is also often added to foods around this time of year.

Wow! Congratulations! I know how hard it is to figure out what on earth could be triggering an allergic reaction. My Mom went through something similar with severe stomach upset and she tried all sorts of things for years until she figured out it was the preservatives BHA and BHT which show up in all sorts of different foods which only makes it harder to suss out.

Sorry you have this allergy as nutmeg is in so many things. Don't know if you know but while Coke won't ever reveal their formula, it has been rumored that they do buy large quantities of nutmeg, so you might want to be careful around that too.

Years ago I had allergy testing and I was allergic to many things, but never really had a reaction except to shelfish .

This year I had some miserable coughs and after DH nagging me, I went to a pulmonolgist. I mentioned that on my annual blood work, I was always normal for everything ( well some high cholesterol) except the EOS was always off the charts high. Each doctor said it was an indication of allaergies but since I really had no other issues and did not have severa allergic reactions, it was not a big thing. This year I tested for Dog allergy specifically as that seemed to be the most likely. To my surprise, I 'm not allergic.

The pulmonologist said I have a form of asthma and using a mild inhaler should manage it.

So I have the option of going for a complete allergy testing and I'm just debating it. I avoid shellfish but otherwise I suspect it's stuff in the air that I really can't do much about.........

Matthias, I’m sorry to hear this but glad to learn you figued it out. I loved freshly grated nutmeg and use it someone often. A little goes a long way We will be cooking with it this week — pumpkin-ginger cheesecake and atop homemade deep dish custard pie.

I have never heard of that particular allergy. Perhaps you shoukd find out what other foodstuffs are related or cross-linked.

Do get only hives? around your mouth? No gasping or wheezing? Check with your allergist to be sure your reactions won’t get worse.

Amylou, you need to find out what is causing your issues. That qualifies a low grade anaphylaxis and it can suddenly get worse.

When you get the full panel of allergy testing they test for the most common allergens. Something out of the way like nutmeg wouldn't be on the panel. I am allergic to something or other as I sneeze massively several times a day but never tested positive except to Kapok. I wonder if they still test for that. I had to explain to my allergist that I had lived in Florida where people grew them as decorative yard plants. He had never met anyone allergic to Kapok.

I have developed some food intolerances in my old age. I cant eat onions and worse watermelon. Now that will make me vomit so perhaps it is an allergy but it is easy to avoid.
