request for help with living room area rug layout

Attached please find a mock-up to scale of the living room. The room measures 17’ wide x about 25’ deep. There are irregularities in the wood floor about three feet in on each end, represented by dashes on the mock-up, that I’d love to hide with area rugs. I thought I’d find a 13’ x 20’ sea grass/jute/sisal area rug, but so far no luck.

Would it be strange to lay a 12’x18’ rug closer to the entry of the room (off-center) as shown in the mock-up? (I’ve added a Persian rug on top in the mock-up, centered to the room as furniture layout.)

Any help would be appreciated!

Add a picture of the actual room. I would not layer rugs.

Try this......move the ottoman where your coffee table is now just to see if a darker plane will give you the "anchorage" you're looking for. If that does the trick then you can either purchase a new, dark coffee table or paint the base of your existing one. I think adding an area rug will make the space seem too closed in. I like all your colors.

I would stick with earth tones and find something that has just a small splash of the red in it so it will compliment the tile used in your hearth, like the rug above. These are similar with the same color pallette and at least have the colors in them and also include a little blue. This one is a different style in the same color scheme. If you go to HomeDepot.com and search for floor rugs, they have a HUGE selection, 2900 or so. I would suggest that you spend a little bit of time flipping through it just to see what you like. Save the images and bring them back here to show us. Once you find the rug, then you can pull a color from it for curtains in (if you're changing them) and maybe some sofa pillows or accessories. As for the mirror, I'm glad that you like that idea. I'm posting some pics to give you an idea of placement. You could even go with a round mirror, the only problem with the one you have is the scale is off so a larger round mirror could be pretty with the sconces. This one doesn't have the sconces but I love how it's just casually sitting on the mantel. Less formal. I'd probably not go any closer to the sconces than about 6 inches give or take.

I have lived in 2 log homes. I understand your problem! Do you have any interior stonework also? Last time I was in this position, I tried to pull the base color of the rug from the lightest tone in the stone on my fireplace, so that I didn't end up with too much going on. Jewel tones do seem to work well, also. I like the last 3 you posted in the comments. It is really hard to pick unless you can see the rugs in person, too. I ended up ordering my last rug through a local furniture store, where I could see and feel samples. They ended up being very competitive on price. I tried ordering online first, and the colors always seemed a little "off" once I got them rolled out in my wood-everywhere house.

I would move the sofa off that wall and make the long end of the sectional be parallel with the kitchen peninsula, so the sofa faces the sliders on the long side. I would get a rectangular dining table to go in between the living room area and the dining kitchen area. The wall with the high windows could use a bookcase, or a console table, a lamp and some colorful art. Some large plants would be good too. You have great light and need some more contrast in your color scheme. See about a stronger color rug and throw pillows if you can. It's a lovely room.

Hi, you have a beautiful home. Layering rugs isn't for everyone but I think in some cases it can look really nice, you have neutral tones in your space so I think that finding the fitting rugs won't be an issue. I would do a simple on one the bottom also neutral, a beige tone and a bit heavier when it comes to texture. The one above you can play with, I will post some photos of examples that I personally think look nice.

Thank you! Is it ok to have the first (bottom) area rug placed off center length-wise in the room (it will be centered width-wise) so that the area rug extends closer to the entry of the room, or is it a bad idea to have it off center? Looking for ways to minimize the appearance of floor irregularities the run the width of the floor about 3’ in on both ends.

It's ok because the rug, sofa are centered on the fireplace. Just make sure there is clearance for French doors to swing into the room. Leaving the table and chairs positioned as is, is perfect. Looks beautiful, Holly. My kind of room.

I found an option for a slightly larger rug: 13’ wide x 20’ long, as compared to 12’ wide x 18’ long. I’ll attach a mock up with the larger rug.

The differences in exposed wood floor around the rug would be:
12x18: 2.5’ of floor would show on the sides, and 3.75’ would be exposed on the ends

13x20: 2’ of floor would show on the sides, and 2.5’ would be exposed on the ends

What would look better?? The 13x20 provides length to center the rug and cover floor irregularities that I don’t love, but is a lot of rug. The 12x18 leaves things I don’t love exposed but also leaves us with more wood floor. I think I’m concerned that 13x20 might cover too much floor. Any thoughts based on experience would be much appreciated!!
