Room of the Day: Familiar Silhouette Animates a Living Area
Who says the beloved character is only for kids’ rooms? Fans in Singapore create a clubhouse in their media area
The homeowners’ request was clear and straightforward: “The couple wanted a Mickey Mouse-themed space,” says Kate Deng, co-founder of Mr Shopper Studio. This condo’s owners are self-confessed Mickey Mouse lovers. “They initially preferred bright colors, but we felt it would make the area look a little too childish,” Deng says.
Deng and co-designers Ken Lee and Ben Teo set out to create a space that has the Disney character element that the owners wanted but exudes a classy, grown-up look that they won’t tire of and that befits the new chapter in their lives as a married couple.

The team had to make precise measurements to ensure that that the iconic silhouette would have the right proportions. “We had to balance the character’s ratio with the TV dimension, as well as the limitations of the existing wall length,” she says. Made of cut-out black laminate and backlighted with LED strip lighting, the Mickey Mouse figure makes a dramatic statement on the feature wall.
The rustic wood grain on the feature wall and ceiling cladding also draw all attention to the minimally furnished living area. The wood element forms a canopy that runs across the space.

A bar counter was built behind the sofa to enhance the relaxed vibe. “The owners like to watch TV while chilling out, but they hardly have the time to cook and dine at home — thus the absence of a dining area. If they really need a proper sit-down dinner, they dine in their balcony,” Deng says.
An array of caged pendant lights completes the industrial look, while a full-length mirror visually doubles the space.

Glass sliding doors provide a refreshing view of the outdoors and fill the living area with natural daylight. With a cozy sofa and soft cushions to boot, this is indeed the ideal spot for the owners to kick back and relax — with their much-loved mouse — after a long, hard day.

To incorporate the Mickey Mouse theme, the designers took inspiration from the Hello Kitty Orchid Garden Cafe in Singapore’s Changi Airport. “They made use of the character’s silhouette to create their display cabinets,” Deng says. She and her collaborators decided to employ the same technique in this space while using industrial style, which is very popular in Singapore, as the key design theme.
