Mohammed, this is the North American Houzz, where most of the commenters/contributors are from the USA. It would be helpful if you converted meters into feet/inches. Unfortunately, the metric system has never caught on here.

From an American perspective, and someone who is no longer young, I would find the hike from bed to the bathroom…through the closet/dressing area, to be too far…especially during sleep hours…when ”nature calls”.

It's not a hike. And there are any number of online conversion calculators if you can't do a rough conversion in your head. The bedroom is roughly 12' x 12' and the dressing room is less than 6' deep. For the record, 1m is more or less 39 inches and 1.8m is 6'.

Mohammed, what do you mean by "improving this structure"? What do you want to improve?

The dressing room and bath seems a bit tight. Could you shave off 10 cm from each of the guest bedrooms to give yourself a little more room?

@colleenoz, it’s a matter of perspective. The ensuite, (or master bath as it’s more commonly known in the US), is just 6 steps from our bed. As I’m on several medications that require me to drink copious amounts of water during the day, having the bathroom that close is a necessary convenience. I can get there remaining half asleep, do my business, wash hands, and get back into bed quickly. I can do this without turning on a light.

However, having to get out of bed, turn a corner, find my way through the closet before reaching the the door to the bathroom, means I’d definitely need to be awake. And it’s a greater distance, for sure.

As for doing the conversions, over the years many people starting threads here, have been from outside the US and Canada, not realizing they’ve come to the North American Houzz site. Once they were made aware, they either thanked us and went off to find their local Houzz, or willingly converted their measurements into feet/inches. Nobody has responded snarkily, as you have.

It looks like you're trying to maximize seating in the reception area. It is a bit tight there with the dining table. Can you increase the size of it.

Do you need the 1/2 bath and full bath right next to one another? Can you combine?

Why not open up that empty wall in the kitchen for easier access to dining?

I'd move the tv to the middle of the end wall. This'll give you the entire width of the space to configure with sofas and lounge chairs or sectionals with chaises and ottomans.

Good point about the kitchen wall shirlpp. Removing it could change the whole flow of that area.

darbuka, there was a time not so long ago when only the ultra rich were six steps away from a bathroom. In my own home the toilet is almost at the other end of the house from my bedroom, and while I also wake in the night to use it (with three turns and two hallways involved), it’s never occurred to me that I need an ensuite six steps away from my bed.

The OP’s ensuite might not work for you personally, but I think you’re a special case. I mean, he could make it all handicapped accessible while he’s at it, but how many poeple would need that?

Um, @colleenoz, lots of folks need…or will need, ADA compliant doorways…way more than you might think. You must be quite young, to think it a rare occurrence.

Life hits you when you least expect it. Several bouts of pneumonia, rendered my lungs useless. After a couple of years lugging around an oxygen tank, I finally had a lung transplant in 2017. Initially needed a rolling walker to get around. Wouldn’t have fit through a normal doorway.

Fortunately, before moving into this house in 2016, we widened all of the doorways in all four bedrooms, and bathrooms. A couple of months after lung surgery, I had emergency bowel surgery, and was in the hospital for 6 months. Again needed the walker, for longer this time.

More recently, in April, I had a knee replacement. Again, the rolling walker was necessary. Even used a wheelchair at the beginning, when going anywhere that required a lot of walking.

All of this, after spending my life as an active, very athletic person…a four sport athlete all through school, who also played competitive racquetball, paddleball, and skied. So, scoff if you must…but, you never know what lies ahead.

Nope, I’m in my 60s with bad knees and cancer, and have had elderly relatives in wheelchairs, but I still feel that homeowners should make the improvements that will make their own lives easier, not those of potential successors who may not even eventuate.

I agree you design your home for your use. I am waondering exactly what you want from us I assume just tweaking the floor plan but come back here Mohamed with answers to our questions so we can really help. DO NOT start another post just all itmes related to this one posted here in comments. BTW I am Canadian we do metric.

Since the OP didn't say this was for elderly/handicapped living, maybe we shouldn't assume they should design their home according to our elder or handicapped states. The OP might be healthy and able enough to walk 5-8 meters to the bathroom, might not need to get up in the middle of the night to do it.

The U.S. might be a major country in North America, but it is just one of many. All of the other countries in North America use metric or can be metric/imperial fluid like Canada. I've seen metric and imperial layouts here on Houzz.

It would be helpful if the OP came back and told us more about the house situation.

There is no entrance transition - people come straight from outdoors into the living area. Nowhere to take off coats and shoes, etc.

The OP is asking for opinions on what he can do to maker the "structure" better. All he is getting are opinions, there are no right or wrong answers. Especially being as the OP has given no one any info to go by. All anyone is really making is assumptions.

I spent a good portion of my life as an expat and so I think in metric or U.S. customary system, but, like most people, I don’t actually convert between the two. I either work in metric or work in U.S. customary.

When you are asking for free help on a website, you convert to the system which posters are most familiar with because that is the entire reason for crowd sourcing. Plenty of people in Notth America speak Spanish and there are quite a few French speaking Canadians… still if you actually want help on this site, you should post in English. So can we please stop pearl clutching over someone pointing out, what should be obvious to all?

The value of crowdsourcing is varying perspectives. The OP may not need a closer bathroom at this point, but may benefit from the perspective of someone who does. @darbuka qualified their response from the beginning by saying, ”I would find,” there was no assumption that the OP was in a similar situation and likely an assumption the OP wasn’t and hadn’t considered it. Which, again, is the entire point of posting on sites like this.

For the rest of those who commented…of course I’m aware that Canada uses the metric system. However, I’ve been on the various iterations of the kitchen forum long enough to know, Canadians who start threads here know to convert their measurements into feet/inches…because the large majority of folks who post here, are indeed from the USA.
