Fix existing tomato bed soil and how to make new bed better?
Comments (4)I use bark as mulch in raised beds with no problems, however, when you apply it can make all the difference. I don't put it on until it starts to heat up and I need to water alot. If you put it on in the spring then the ground stays cooler and wetter and the plants don't grow as fast. Cooler and wetter is a good thing in the summer but not in the spring. Also don't mix the bark mulch with the soil. If you need to work the soil, then pull it back. Bark mulch does provide home for pill bugs and such but if you don't apply it until the plants are strong then the insects won't bother them....See MoreCO2 imput into grow beds?
Comments (5)The roots need oxygen, and you can easily aerate the water a couple ways. That will raise the dissolved oxygen levels in the water. But as far as Co2, that's another story. I know there are products that manufactures claim by adding to the water will increase the Co2 absorbed by the plant. But as far as I have seen there is nothing by any real research to substantiate that claim. Though I do believe the roots can absorb some Co2, but not in any significant amounts. it's not the job of the roots to uptake Co2. And even if you add Co2 to the water, 99% or more of the Co2 will be absorbed through the plants leaves. If you are growing in a well ventilated greenhouse, you wont need to worry about the plants getting enough Co2. The plants willstill deplete the Co2 from the air. But by ventilating the greenhouse with fresh air, you will be continually replacing the Co2 in the air the plants have useed. Thus, you wont actually be depleting the co2 at all, as long as it's well ventilated. Also, I just thought I would mention that just by increasing Co2 levels, that wont necessarily make the plants absorb it. The plants Co2 consumption is also related to environmental conditions like light levels, humidity, temperature etc.....See MoreI would like some advice on topsoil
Comments (25)I am typically one of the people who encourage posters to improve their soil rather than importing. But it's obvious in this case, based on the volume stated, that it's not feasible unless you're a dedicated composting fanatic with heavy machinery and plenty of time. And that's just the soil fertility aspect, aside from the need for fill volume itself. 275 yds spread, say, 6" thick would cover a third of an acre. Ed's not making a few raised beds, folks. Whole different ballgame....See MoreHi, We want some ideas on how to make this structure better. TIA.
Comments (16)“I mean, he could make it all handicapped accessible while he’s at it, but how many people would need that?” Um, @colleenoz, lots of folks need…or will need, ADA compliant doorways…way more than you might think. You must be quite young, to think it a rare occurrence. Life hits you when you least expect it. Several bouts of pneumonia, rendered my lungs useless. After a couple of years lugging around an oxygen tank, I finally had a lung transplant in 2017. Initially needed a rolling walker to get around. Wouldn’t have fit through a normal doorway. Fortunately, before moving into this house in 2016, we widened all of the doorways in all four bedrooms, and bathrooms. A couple of months after lung surgery, I had emergency bowel surgery, and was in the hospital for 6 months. Again needed the walker, for longer this time. More recently, in April, I had a knee replacement. Again, the rolling walker was necessary. Even used a wheelchair at the beginning, when going anywhere that required a lot of walking. All of this, after spending my life as an active, very athletic person…a four sport athlete all through school, who also played competitive racquetball, paddleball, and skied. So, scoff if you must…but, you never know what lies ahead....See MoreYardvaark
