Do house plans reflect the way we really live?
Comments (55)What a timely post for me! My DH and I just retired, sold our large and primarily formal home in two weeks and then moved several states west to be closer to family. We have been house hunting the past two years during visits to this area. We have finally decided to custom build a small home, but highly functional for the way we live. We are also making modifications for our continued aging in place. We almost bought a much larger home with a formal dining room but I just could not see myself using that space. It was nice to have while my daughter was growing up but I really do not wish to have a dedicated formal dining room. I do plan to use my formal dining room furniture on a daily basis. It was my grandmother's and I know she would be happy to know it is being used. I will also have the kitchen island to use for breakfast and snacks. We do not have a lot of family left so small is okay for us. At least, I hope so. I keep on second guessing myself thinking maybe I should have gone with the bigger house that my husband liked. My new home will have a combined living/dining/kitchen area. I hope I will like that. I am excited that the house we are building has a laundry room with a door into the master bedroom closet. You can go from the yard into the laundry room on into the closet and then directly into the master shower. We both enjoy gardening and this is just a handy set up when you work outside in the yard. I am planning on having this whole area including the closet tiled. The rest of the home will be the wide hickory hardwood floors. I live in Texas and it is hot here more often than it is cold so the tile floors will be cool and easy to care for. I am just hoping I will be happy in a much smaller space. I sold a lot of my furniture before the move and I do not miss it. The last few years we lived in the big house, we never used the upstairs. We did all of our living on the main floor and it was quite comfortable. DH and I only have one grown daughter and she has not lived near us in years. We have no grandchildren either and very few family members left. I lived in the Atlanta area when they had a terrible drought several years ago and just could not bring myself to use the whirlpool tub knowing I was wasting precious water. I am trying to be very aware of my water usage since I am in another state that has been undergoing a drought. I hope I will be making a smaller footprint with this retirement home....See MoreHow Can We Tell If It's The Granite We Picked.
Comments (38)Thank you for your kind words. The slab I posted in full sunlight doesn't begin to do it justice. I did not want to hijack your post with details of our own TB quest, but since you asked...... We originally saw 2 slabs of 2cm TB with the distinct gold veins and fell in love. All set to pull the trigger when we realized the slabs were not long enough to accommodate the 45 degree seam we wanted in the corner. Many more trips to stone yards to try to find oversized slabs with the same look. Finally fabricator located two 3cm slabs via online inventory at a stone yard we had already visited. The slabs were stacked behind something else and we had never seen them. We were not optimistic when we went to see them, but ecstatic when we got a good look. We reused our existing cabinets. I guess they are some version of oak (bordering on hickory?). I see lots of people here painting over them but we like them and they tie into the rest of our open concept home. This forum has been a godsend! After dragging home countless bs samples, "sandesurf'" to the rescue. She also has TB and possibly cabinet finish more like yours? She posted the picture attached of her bs. Crema Marfil. 2x4 beveled marble. Through Oracle Tiles Amazon storefront, I ordered a large sample for under $5. Hubby and I agreed and ordered for our bs. It just arrived yesterday and I am getting quotes for install. I'll post my own pic when completed. Very excited to have it wrapped up. Good luck to you! I predict once it's installed you will love your own TB. Every day since the install, I marvel anew how much I love it's movement and ease of cleaning....See MoreCould we talk about living with white walls?
Comments (61)Thank you for posting pictures, Linelle and lalalalane! Lovely spaces you have there. : ) No pressure or worries, zippity. Thank you for your desire to share. I'm so glad you came back to post the manufacturer, tijeras. I think more than one company has Linen White, so this is very helpful. Thank you! A few of you have mentioned moving and changing up your color schemes, sometimes in relation to what "everyone" else is doing, sometimes in response to the physical surroundings, or just wanting a change of pace. I. just. don't. know. what. I. want. I'm not interested in following the crowd per se, but I am interested in comfy-cozy, but still bright and airy for our family spaces. I do wonder if I'd get tired of white after time and need more color on my walls like some of you mentioned. If I really wanted to change it up, I guess a new color would only be a few cans of paint and a few days of chaos away! : ) I read an interesting comment in a book called Perfect Palettes for Painting Rooms yesterday. The author mentioned that in a room with lots of windows, to be careful of not doing too bright of a white or people in there would experience an after image when looking around the room. Has anyone ever experienced such a phenomenon in a white space? I have 3 nice big windows facing south in one room, and another room that has windows facing south, west, and north, and certainly don't want it to be uncomfortably bright in those spaces. Does this mean I should go with a "darker" white in these rooms...if I go white?...See MoreHow should we arrange our new couch in our “bowling alley” living room
Comments (11)This is a close up of a tweedy type rug that might work for you - I just think a darker rug will cozy up the area and complement the ottoman so much better.... This rug has been discontinued and the remaining sizes are probably too big for your space, but it might be a direction to be looking, if it appeals to you: Something like this might work, too. I can't tell for sure about the colors but Pottery Barn has samples available in store if there is one near you, refundable deposit when returned:...See Moresusanka
