Help me decide on my open Great Room floor plan! (kitchen included)
Comments (16)Benjesbride, what you say regarding dining/island makes sense, but unfortunately I have ~11'x16' space to fit in the kitchen. If I decide to rotate the kitchen the way you say it, then my kitchen island will be quite small. I too started out thinking of a longer island and thus came up with option 2, and am not able to find pictures to tell me if that would look ok or not. Secondly, currently the plan is that the Great Room will be mainly conversation area. TV will be in a separate room, so no need to consider TV-watchability. Mama Rachel, your idea of spice kitchen is great! That's the kitchen I started out "wanting". I had to abandon it halfway, however, because of space constraints. My whole house is ~2200 sqft, therefore allocating disproportionately large amount of space to the kitchen would have meant I gave up on some other priorities. Mama Rachel : regarding powder: we decided to ditch the powder because of the availability of full bath on that floor, which otherwise will be guest bath. We also wanted as much storage as possible, therefore decided on having a storage rather than powder. Anyway, here's the original plan. Note that we added ~5ft towards the courtyard and some square footage along top wall (which is facing backyard). I am working on sizing of the entry right now, because I think it's a bit too big for the house, but that space will NOT become available to the kitchen again due to the building rules....See MoreHelp with Furniture Layout in Open Floor Plan Great Room
Comments (10)The (real, licensed) architect drew in the same layout we’ve seen in suburban model homes everywhere. He freely admitted that these layouts are not his strong suit and didn’t want to spend any time in it. I didn’t share the drawing because I don’t want to get hung up on tweaking the original idea. I thought starting with a blank slate would inspire more creativity. Also, I’d prefer to have a round dining table for better interaction when we’re all together. I’d also like to avoid placing the TV above the fireplace if there are better alternatives....See MoreHelp! Arrangement/furniture/decor for very small open floor plan.

Comments (9)If your mom is insistent on a cooktop in a peninsula/island/pass-through, she should be aware that that means a hood hanging down from the ceiling in the middle of the room (or pass-through). It will also mean more expensive venting b/c of the need for a larger hood and a stronger fan than you would need if against the wall, as well as a finished surface on all sides. The larger & stronger hood is b/c there are more and stronger air currents in an open space like a peninsula/island/pass-through. The hood will need to be at least 6" wider than the cooktop (more would be better) and 27" deep. 660cfm to 900cfm are probably needed, more if she does high-heat/smoke cooking or grilling inside. [Please don't say downdraft or no hood -- especially in an open space. Fumes, odors, grease, steam, & smoke (FOGSS) travel very far if they are not expelled from the home with adequate ventilation. Downdrafts are mostly useless and no hood is, well, no ventilation at all. In addition, with gas, a downdraft will interfere with the flame of the burners and, potentially, "blow out" the flame.]...See Morespringertc
