Idea for Layout - Kitchen w/ Living & Family Room
Comments (44)It's been a while, but here's a new idea, any thoughts? Someone suggested turning the DR into a reading room, and although at first I dismissed the idea, on second thought I think that may be a better idea, as I'll end up using that more often, looking out into the backyard watching the kids play in the evenings, and being able to read and hang out in a nice environment. The new everyday DR would be connected to the outdoor dining area which would be nice for indoor/outdoor entertaining. Since people have been saying that having a bathroom in such an open area is awkward, that would be turned into a small pantry, and a small half bath would be added below the new reading room (former DR), with a door from the hallway. A TV would be behind the new bathroom wall towards the living room. Does anyone think think the TV wall is awkward? It's 9 feet to the LR window in front, but someone feels a little too tight to me. There's not much of a choice because I don't want to strain my neck by hanging it over the fireplace, and don't want to hang it in the reading room either since I'd rather enjoy the outdoor environment from there, and have some quiet, too. Thanks for any thoughts on this new layout....See MoreFreezing food - ideas and techniques
Comments (13)Single servings of basics like mashed potatoes, oatmeal, etc., that just make getting by a little easier is a great idea. Re the stew vegetables, see what your mom thinks of them after one try. The blanched veg that I recommended won't be crisp by the time the stew is heated. They'll just have a better shot at not being goo. A lot of this also depends on the moisture content of the stew, acidity, and a ton of other chemical processes that are hard to control. Maybe your stew will come out of the freezer exactly to your mom's liking. I always cook the quiche fully, but not to very browned since it'll have another shot in the oven. Same with things like lasagna. Remember, you're better off cooking out the excess water because that's what causes it to go funky in the freezer. When I can't find things because they've weighted the search engines in weird ways, I just find another search engine. Amazon couldn't find this. Google did: http://www.amazon.com/Ovenable-Paperboard-Container-100-Count/dp/B00E8MJ098/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1425869721&sr=8-12&keywords=freezer+to+oven+containers If this was the one you were talking about, yes, that's the kind of thing I meant. What's great about the paperboard is that it doesn't break when dropped. Note that these don't have lids. They might be ideal, used with a vacuum sealer, though the ziplock you mentioned will work for shorter periods in the freezer (more likely to get a lot of ice crystals with the Ziplock). I tend to prefer old fashioned freezer paper to Ziplocks for pans, but you have to be good at sealing out the air for paper to be a good alternative. They make mini-foil loaf pans, which are great for meatloaf. My mother uses them. http://www.amazon.com/Hefty-Foil-Baby-Loaf-5ct/dp/B000ZNUFHK/ref=sr_1_1?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1425870516&sr=1-1&keywords=mini+foil+loaf+pan They're expensive for disposable, but are are easily cleaned and reused, if the loaf is removed for eating. Otherwise they get pierced by forks and knives. Again, if you can get to a catering or restaurant supply house, you might find a much better price by the case (though only if you're not spending more on gas). Foil pans, for sure, can be recycled. The paperboard ones might, but you'd have to check with your provider....See MoreU-Shape Kitchen Help - Restricted due to Stairway
Comments (32)So, I did a layout with a centered sink. HOWEVER, while I was working with it, I noticed 2 mistakes in all the previous layouts. First, somehow the 5'9" wall was reduced to 5'0". So, that means the wall sticks out another 9" into the Kitchen and Dining Room. Second, I used the partial measurements instead of the full measurement to determine the length of the Kitchen and there was a difference of a bit more than 3" -- 3" in my favor. So, the net is that b/w the two, there is only a little more than a 5-inch difference. While it does not affect the perimeter layout, it does affect the island. So, I reduced the island by 6" -- it's now 54" wide instead of 60". A positive result is that now the aisle b/w the bottom wall and the island is a solid 36" wide instead of b/w 35" & 36" 54" is still wide enough for the island "legs" and 2 seats. 1.5" overhang + 1.5" leg + 24" seat + 24" seat + 1.5" leg + 1.5" overhang = 54" [Note: In your inspiration picture the island does not appear to have a 1.5" overhang on the sides -- maybe 1/2". If that's the case, then you would have 0.5" overhangs on the sides and 2.5" wide legs. Keep in mind that the Kitchen in your inspiration picture appears quite a bit larger than yours, so you may not be able to replicate it exactly, but you can get the general look.] So, here are two layouts -- the corrected Layout #1 and Layout #3 (centered sink). Personally, I'd go with Layout #1, an undermount sink, and the faucet centered on the window. But it's up to you -- it is your Kitchen after all! :-) . Layout #1 -- Corrected! Since you want all cabinets facing the refrigerator, I eliminated the 24" that was facing the DW and put in a 27" cabinet facing the refrigerator. However, I want to caution you against putting place settings & silverware on the range wall...that's where the Prep Zone is and you don't want people getting in the way of meal prep to get a dish or piece of silverware or when unloading the DW. It's best if the dishes stay in the island. You'll have to walk a step or two farther, but in the long run, it will be better. . . Layout #3 -- centered sink: Note that instead of totally eliminating corner storage, I made the following changes: The 36" x 36" corner susan is now a 33" x 36" corner susan. I know that some cabinetmakers offer them, but I don't know if all do. I would definitely look into it. The sink base is now 27" wide. The reduction made it possible to have a 33" x 36" corner susan The cabinet to the left of the DW is now 24" wide (with an extended stile). This cabinet can now hold dishes & silverware. Note that the sink crowds the range wall a bit more b/c the sink had to be moved over to the right....See MoreMiele USA W1's Prewash/Soak/Add Item June 2022 Update Fix Ready
Comments (217)My WWH860 was updated by the app about two weeks ago. I never had the problem with the prewash so I wasn't sure why. I did have to rerun the Calibration program. What I noticed after? Water plus no longer automatically appears in the app as an Extra. There is less water in every fill in every program. I had previously entered the programming menu and set water plus to one water drop a few months before the update, so I went back into that menu and reset it to one drop, afterward not much difference in the water level. I entered the menu again and set the level to 2 drops. There might be a bit more water but it is hard to notice. Still less water in the machine than before the update. I've turned auto-update off. From now on if nothing is wrong I don't want any updates....See Morebbstx
