Although it is in reverse.....stained doors and windows and white woodwork...look at "stained doors and windows with white baseboard" in the Home Decorating Forum....especially post from jaymielo. I happen to like the look of mixing them...that is the way it is in my daughter's home (stained woodwork, white doors) and to me it looks great.......to each their own~~

I was reading the newspaper awhile ago and it suddenly occurred to me that maybe I should share what I did in my library room back in 1990. In this room the crown molding was stained as was the baseboard and trim (my dad insisted on staining the bookcase oak however(!)). I tried to take photos that would show the paint colors more clearly. Ceiling is yellow ochre as are the two end walls. Side walls in the room are a deep green. The wide border under the crown molding was one of those "got to have it" moments. It lowered the ceiling some, which wasn't my intention, it was just so beautiful I had to use it. ha. Anyway, just wanted to show that the crown was not painted the same color as the ceiling and turned out alright (to me).

The problem with doing touch ups or partially doing an area, is that it tends to make everything else dingy. From the standpoint of labor, it is also disproportionately labor intensive. You still have to protect the whole room, even if you decide not to do the ceilings, for example. Similarly, it is far easier and time efficient to do the woodwork before the walls, whether spraying or brushing the woodwork. Were I trying to save money, I would opt to do one or two rooms completely, rather than to do the whole house incompletely.

The beach condo has a big LR/kitchen great room. I painted the kitchen cabinets SW Shell White. Walls will be SW Amazing Gray eventually. My BR will be SW Amazing Gray, sis's BR will be SW Mindful Gray. My bathroom will be either SW Jetstream or SW Agua Fria; haven't decided on sis's bathroom yet. Next on the list is painting all the doors, baseboards and trim (door & window). Walls will wait until I have more time than just weekends to paint. In the LR/kitchen area, do I paint the doors/trim/baseboards the same Shell White, or can I choose a different white? The baseboards do run right up to the edge of the cabinets (left and right sides of the kitchen opening) if that matters. I was really wanting to use the same color on all the doors/trim/baseboards if possible so i can save $$ by getting a 5 gallon bucket.
