Can you produce a floor plan? I’m having difficulty understanding the function and flow from the photos.

Please show the entire living room. There is a working fireplace? It is a bit difficult to follow.

Sectionals easily overwhelm a space. They look ok in a store which has lots of open area, but when you bring one into your house, it’s like a Christmas tree. (”The tree didn’t look that big outside!”)

@Houzz - We get it. You don't have to include this on every dilemma.

The seating arrangement does not feel right because it is not centered around the fireplace, not because of the size of the sofa.

Rotate the sofa 90 degrees and place it to the left of the fireplace, so that one side has its back to the dining room. Rotate the dining table to make more room and leave just enough room to pass through the hall door. This will create a separate space as its own room.

Then place the leather armchair/settee to the right of the fireplace so it is in the blue niche facing the sofa and fireplace. And not up against a wall. Move the floor lamp next to it and create a reading nook.

One has to be in the room to determine the exact placement but tweak everything here and there a bit until it feels balanced.

I wonder if the dining bench could be used as an ottoman for the sofa. Then use the coffee table as a side table. Or maybe the bench in front of the fire?

A smaller sofa (that doesn't overlap the opening) with an ottoman would have been a better choice.

Try tracefloyd's idea for your social and conversational area, floating the sectional with one back to the entry doorway and the other to the dining area. Then make the blue recess into a media nook with your TV moved to an articulated wall bracket left of the window. Add two small scale swivel chairs right of the fireplace so they can turn to face the sectional or to watch TV, and all the seats have a views of the TV. I prefer the light colored coffee table with plants for the seating area. Sell the brown seat; I assume that's your old 2-seater. Put the $$ toward the new chairs

Thank you everyone for your help. I was getting stuck in my head and worried about it as i really like the sofa. I will try your suggestions this weekend. If all else fails we do have the option to try and return it.

I would start out by just sliding it out so that it faces the fireplace, on center, without rotaing it. The tv might work to the left of the fireplace, perhaps sitting on a chest of drawers. I’d try placing the computer, which is now sitting on the kitchen table, on a desk where the tv is now. It’s the perfect home-office nook! As far as the leather chair goes, I can’t see it to make any suggestions. Anyway, after youve finalized a working floor plan, you’ll need to get a much larger rug to go under the sofa and coffee table. And you'll need lamps, of course. I don't see any floor receptacles, though. Do you own this place such that you could have some added?

Im very perplexed at why you are not using that little nook as an area for the table, and the larger space for the living room. You could put a small cafe table for breakfast probably still. I think you need to replan the entire space and open up to the idea that the forced small space is not ideal for a living room.

Okay RL, that's what you meant by switching the rooms. We didn't get that the first time. Good idea! Is the TV in the blue niche where we can't see it? Will it move out of there?

I’ve created a rough floor plan with our old sofa (thankfully we didnt get rid of it) its a very awkward space. The space either side of the fire space is too narrow for a tv stand and the fire place is too tall for a tv to be above. Interested to know if anyone can see a layout we’ve missed.

Okay, maybe we did miss something lol. This is a thought, put the TV on one of the dining room walls in your floor plan. Place the seating facing the TV in an L shape with backs to the fireplace and kitchen. Put the dining table in the blue niche.

Or leave everthing as is in your floor plan, but at least face the leather chair toward the fireplace at an angle and get an ottoman for it.

The farther your couch is from the TV, the higher it can be. So I’d do this.

The former TV nook would be great for a sideboard or hutch.

The corner sofa is fixed in this orentation so doesnt really work but this is what it looks like.

Can you try turning, so one side is under clock. A larger rug and square coffee table will ground the space and rethink the wall accessories for a less busy/more coordinated look.

Why do you want to use that small nook for your living room? I agree with RL, that nook would work much better for your dining area, and the larger looking open area where you now have your table, for your living area. I just don't understand stuffing your living room furniture into that small nook. Ok now I'm thinking maybe it is because the TV placement is difficult in the larger area, hopefully maybe someone can come up with a suggestion for that. :)

The main reason is the TV my partner wants the TV to be central with the sofa, which isnt possible. He’s also concerned about being too far away from the TV. The fireplace is dictating the position, We’ve conscidered covering it somehow to allow the tv stand to sit centrally with a sofa.

Turn the sofa so the L is in the corner, that should also let you bring it off the back wall. Can you return that sofa?

Yes we should be able to. We’ve contacted the company just waiting for a call back to arrange collection

maybe take some blue painters tape and layout some size and location options?
