Small Details Make a Big Statement
Looking to refresh your home on a tight budget or with limited time? Think small. Here are 9 ideas to inspire you
When designing a home, the big decisions usually stress us out the most. Should we tear that wall down? Is this the best flooring for the entire house? Will that sofa be the right statement piece for the entryway?
But little things can have a big impact too. From cabinet pulls to accessories, details can make or break a space. Here are nine small touches that deserve to be celebrated.

How about this outdoor staircase? It is a utilitarian walkway, but the homeowners elevated its design. They could easily have made each stair tread a plank of wood, but instead, every other tread is special. Turning the wood vertically and chopping it up into sections creates a stairway that's unique and full of personality.
Let's say you've completed a room, and everything is just the way you wanted it. It's brand new, sparkling and shiny, but seems to be missing a little something.
Take this room, for example: beautiful design, luxurious materials and proper use of space. Now take out the trays on the nightstands, the blanket and the pillows. The scheme would turn sterile — those yellow pieces make the room.

Sometimes, all a room needs is a living element. Add a plant or flowers to your space, and it instantly goes from staged to lived in. Do you have a room that could use a little life?
Whenever I visit someone's home for the first time, I am drawn instinctively to the house numbers. They are tiny in comparison to the home facade or even the front door, but they are always the first thing I look for.
Branch House Numbers
House numbers provide a first glimpse into the homeowner's personality. Are they whimsical? Are they fun? Are they classy? Do they have an edge?
Of course, the first thing we did when we moved into our new house was tear out those standard tiny numbers. I took leftover cabinet doors, nails and thread and made graphic house numbers that scream "I love DIY!" to anyone who visits.
Equestrian Hardware
Indoors, cabinet pulls and knobs are the equivalent of exterior house numbers. There is a limit to how creative you can get with your cabinetry for resale purposes, but cabinet pulls? You have no limit. You can go as personal and fun as you want.
Take a look around your house today, and instead of thinking about the carpet that needs replacing or the French doors you'd like for your bedroom, think about the little things.
Could you replace drawer pulls on your dresser and change the look of the room? Could you add pops of red to your kitchen for a fresh appearance? And what do your house numbers say about you?

I love the flooring, the open spaces and those perfectly white walls, but the little bottles lined up like soldiers really strike me too. A simple collection displayed en masse makes a statement about the homeowners' personalities and injects the room with life.
