Windows installed - lots of rain and no shingles!
Comments (40)Since I just ordered 26 Marvin Integritys for my 1926 restoration on Tuesday, I wanted to confirm whether or not the additional head cap was mandatory. Here is what I sent to Marvin. Im doing a complete restoration on my 1928 Craftsman style home in Iowa. I am using Marvin Integrity double hungs, with a 4/1 glass//muntin pattern, as thats what my old double hungs are now. My question involves the installation instruction for these clad windows. I am following the installation instructions listed on your website, and I am stuck at the top of the window. Is there an additional metal drip cap needed on top of the integral mounting flange on top. If it is needed, how high should it extend up above the integral nailing fin, if any. The picture on page 9 of the installation instructions, shows an additional (non supplied) head flashing, but it also appears to be a wood window outside, in that picture.. Please advise. Heres what I got back from Marvin.. Hello Rollie, The instructions suggest you use another drip cap along with the one built into the nailing fin. It is optional but a lot of installers choose to do this. If you want to do this you can install yours directly above the one on the nailing fin. As far as the photo on page 9, this is an error. That should show a fiberglass exterior. I cant believe we havent noticed this and nobody has said anything about it until now. I have informed our technical publications department so they can correct it. Thank you for your email. Please let me know if you have any other questions during the installation. Happy Holidays! Like I said in my previous post, if you were going to use an additional/optional head flashing, I suggest the flashing leg to be to be 4-6 inches above the window. It would make little sense to use a lumberyard "brickmold" standard flashing. IMO.....See MoreExterior renovation progress and window trim color help

Comments (34)1) There is nothing at all "wrong" with the OP's installation, nor with the others shown. The window frame itself doesn't not protrude past the exterior wall cladding, that is only the screen frame that does. For sealing and drainage purposes, no issue at all. The only concern is aesthetic which is subjective 2) Two options to address if an aesthetic concern exists were mentioned: pull the window in toward the interior by either removing the nail fins or modifying the framing, or build out the exterior trim. 3) The irony behind some of the "builder grade" comments are that a window that has a "bug eyed" screen track is designed with a 3 1/4" main frame so that it can be used primarily as a "replacement". At minimum, almost all vinyl windows have the screen pushed outward so as not to take up that valuable real estate, and some windows will actually push the outer sash beyond the 3 1/4" frame into the screen track to gain the sash thickness needed for higher end triple pane glass units, in addition to superior strength and insulation. 4) Due to the design of the vast majority of vinyl windows as it pertains to sealing against air leakage, the outer half of the jamb is generally stepped in so that the inner sash can seal against it. The outer sash therefore needs to be reduced in width of the overall unit, meaning that either the sightlines are unequal (if the sash stiles are the same size), OR the stiles are reduced in width to create equal sightlines of glass. Neither is necessarily right or wrong, however the former will prioritize function/performance whereas the latter is really just for looks....See MoreInstalling exterior shutters on radius-top window with no trim
Comments (8)The trim is weird, though I did just have wider trim put on the rest of the windows and corner boards, but the original trim was not bad, just a little narrower than I wanted. The carriage doors unfortunately will be replaced soon with overhead doors as they let in too much cold air and there is finished living area above the garage. The new doors will be trimmed with the same arch to retain the look. We also have plans to add an overhang, as well as a third bay....See MoreKaesha Matthews
