shutters or no shutters? New Trim or new windows? HELP!
Comments (10)The shutters are the wrong size which makes them look wrong for the house. They are too long and appear to be too wide, leaving no reveal of the house between the windows. There are sites that will explain shutter sizing but I'll try to keep it simple. Imagine the shutters were operational and could open and close. The shutter needs to fit into the window "well" and meet in the center. Yours, if closed would not fit together and would go over the molding on the top and bottom. (hope this makes sense). I think shutters belong on CHC houses but if they're sized wrong, it'll look "off". I think that's where you're at. Color can be determined later. Now here's a thought. If you're thinking about replacing them anyway, I'd take down the ones on the ground floor and trim them down to the correct size, remount in the same holes and see if it doesn't make a huge difference. Then you could play with paint, whatever. Good luck....See MoreRemoving shutters and replacing windows...what about moulding/trim?
Comments (2)IMO those windows do not suit this house. I am glad you are removing those silly shutters. What are the larger windows going to be like? I can’t see that there is much space at the top of those windows for larger trim on the main floor but you could add some to the upper windows....See MoreNeed help with window trim color, shutters, and garage door color
Comments (19)If you make the other changes as suggested, I don't think you'll feel the need to paint the brick. There's no sense creating a maintenance issue where there is none now. The house has the potential to be very handsome. Some pretty pots with flowers on either side of your door will add some color as well. Don't forget that nothing looks pretty this time of year when trees are bare and lawns are brown....See MoreTrim or no trim with lumber above exterior window?
Comments (7)That detail is referred to as a Wood Lintel. In effect, it's supposed to be supporting the wall above the window. Below you see how it should be installed. This architectural detail is typically used in a home when you are trying to duplicate the appearance of aa vintage cottage, adobe, or country French style home. Think carefully before you go down this path. It makes your decisions about window treatments that much more complicated. You don't want to then cover the detail with rods and drapery panels....See MoreJoanne
