I vote for the dumpster. Life is too short to be all bull noses and proliferations!. Seems a Kordes signature for the plant to look perfect but the blooms to be inadequate or absent. Nobody grows a rose just for its foliage and thorns. I suppose you could try going easy on the nitrogent to see if that’ll fix the proliferations. But if you shovel it, that’s one more spot for a new palatine rose!

I had planned to replace her but Magpie brought up something that I hadnt considered. The possibility that the same rose in the same environment could do the same thing.

The one that I have is own root. I wonder if being grafted would change the results ?

I didn't realize one isn't grafted and the new one would be. But I'm not sure if that would change things. If you have the means and sufficient curiosity about it, it could be worth the experiment? Is it in a pot or in the ground?

I was reading an old Houzz discussion about this very subject and the theory was that it could be an overload of alfalfa

It's too much nitrogen, which could be provided by too much alfalfa tea. Magpie, I think you're onto something. Azalea is the culprit-ha. I think there are some other causes of this condition, and some roses are just more susceptible to proliferation and bull nose. I grow four Evelyns and they've always been susceptible to these conditions in spring. Then it pretty much goes away. I have a few more roses that do the bull nose thing, but it's only a few and not as extreme as what Kristine is talking about. I wish I had photos of bull nose Evelyn, but I do have a couple of photos of her mild proliferations, and one pretty awful one. Diane

This rose has never been a healthy rose and that probably doesn't help.

And now finally the bush looks great and there are tons of buds but sadly most are bullnose

Azalea still has those gorgeous huge eyes!! Not that she wouldn't have eyes...but that they're still so unique. :) :)

My Brilliant Veranda doesnt have much better blooms

Perhaps time to veer away from the Verandas. Atleast my Lavender Veranda does well

Kristine, I still think too much alfalfa tea, plus the roses being trapped with the tea in a pot has something to do with the bull nose and proliferation. I'll be very interested to see how they do next year, if they're still around--ha. Diane

I think being later in the season helped, which it seems to do here for those conditions. Also, maybe the nitrogen in the potting soil has been washed away some. Nitrogen is soluble and doesn't build up the way phosphorus builds up--and can become a pollutant. Otherwise it's a Halloween miracle. The rose goblins were just playin' a trick on you. Diane

If your intention is to eventually plant your Jolie Veranda, I think that will go a long way into curing its bullnosing.

The three factors that I think are playing into its bullnosing are: 1. Propensity to bullnose, a varietal trait, 2. Too much nitrogen, either JV requires less nitrogen than normal, or in your attempt to get her caught up to snuff, you went overboard in fertilizing, 3. Container growing constricts the root system, so the fertilizer does not disperse into the surrounding soil as it would if the bush was growing in the ground. The fertilizer stays in the container's restricted root zone, concentrating its effect.

Just some ideas to mull over.

Magpie, so funny. I went out to take a picture and 3 beautiful blooms greeted me.

Every ugly bullnosed bloom has been pink and these blooms are coral color

I am cautiously optimistic. I really want Jolie to flourish

Just my two cents but my Beverly own root had bull nose blooms every flush since I got it fall 2021 as an own root 1gal. It’s grown like gang busters but I was growing tired of seeing buds that looked deformed almost from the start. It got the same fertilizer regimen all my own root first years get—just fish fertilizer—so I figured it’s just a dud.

But this last flush, almost a year after I got it, gave me all perfect buds. I dunno if it just needed time to grow more roots or I just got lucky.

Maybe some roses just need to work it out.

Jolie wasn't good last year, maybe better in the fall and just terrible this spring I thought that I was losing it.

Right now it looks fabulous and a few good blooms to boot

It seems like it must have looked good enough last fall that I saw something that I liked

Hopefully it will turn out to just be a question of the plant needing time to establish. I sure hate bull-nosing!
