The blackberries on the central coast like shade--full shade even--or they just fizzle in the sun. And we are cooler here than most of so cal. Mine are planted in low containers in a 10-inch space between a high and wide sectional couch and 6-foot fence. They get fleeting midday sun at best. My favorite way to get blackberries or raspberries that will live in so cal is to find a wild patch (or successful friend) and take cuttings, or find a nursery that has local varieties.

I grow my blackberries in pots under shade trees in the summer. But still not so productive. Mulberries are easier, more productive & taste a lot like blackberries
