Beyond Desperate, For "Presentable" Dishes
Comments (23)@Blairgirl, Wow.... The Powder is Amazing. I used 1 teapoon of stpp, and filled the rest of the detergent cups with the powder.. and guess what. Only the powder in the prewash cup dissolved completely, with about 20-30% of the main wash powder actually dissolving. Even with that little detergent, everything came out Spotless, and Clean :) There was no stuck on Oatmeal, or Cereal on anything. The un-rinsed Egg Yolk on a pan completely vanished, and our glasses were film free, and clear. I tried the same amount of detergent again, in another load, and it dissolved completely, surprisingly. (I didn't think it'd work, considering my DW hates Powder so much). Once again, everything was Nice & Clean. I'm honestly very curious, to try the Powder without any additive whatsoever. It seems very powerful, and efficient by it self honestly. Oh, and I haven't seen anything stick or redeposit to my glasses or dishes yet, however, if I do, I promise I'll report back. Next Project.. Seeing what STPP does with Tide :) This post was edited by OneBigMess on Tue, Jan 29, 13 at 0:03...See MoreDo you rinse dishes before loading dishwasher ??
Comments (76)Would you draw a bathtub full of water, and let all the family member's use the same water? Its the same thing putting dishes in the dishwasher without rinsing them off. Your washing all your dishes in dirty water.... But according to the posts I've read their are a number of factors that contribute to the discussion. It wastes water by rinsing dishes... Well is the water turned on full blast or just at a trickle? The food on the dishes actually helps the detergent work better... Really? Thats like jumping into a mud pit, going inside and taking a shower while trying to lather up with the mud still on you? Does the soap work better? One post read that the dishes sit in the dishwasher for awhile before the dishwasher is ran. So a response was to use the prerinse. Isn't this the same thing as rinsing before they go into the dishwasher? By not prerinsing, food can and will clog into the sprayer jets, eventually. Most people don't know what their hot water heater is set at, and it usually takes a minimum of 125 to start to break down food, and 160 degrees to dissolve food. Not to mention that your dishwasher is usually filled with cold water because the of the draw from the water pipes doesn't heat up in time to get the hot water to the dishwasher. So, in turn if your dishwasher has a heating element, it heats up the water, which is counter productive of the whole reasoning not to rinse your dishes. How many people use the dryer selection to dry their dishes? Or do you just open up the dishwasher and let the dishes air dry? If you use the dryer selection on the dishwasher, You are using as much, if not more, energy then my prerinsing the dishes..... But from what I read, if you aren't using the correct detergent then you've lost the game. Well, if the dishwasher is doing its job, then it shouldn't matter on what kind of detergent you use? Moral of the story, rinse your dishes, check the temp of your hot water heater, prime the hot water before running your dishwasher, let your dishes air dry and you will actually save more energy....See MoreFavorite dish towels, trivets and oven mitts
Comments (26)dedtired, I know just the place you mean. What a treasure trove of oddball stuff that place has. My collection of dish towels were all hand-me-downs and gifts. A linen calendar from 1977 (which my Mum bought for me in 1995,at her church sale, because it was the year of my HS graduation), towels from places other family members have visited, a few won at Bunco games. I haven't found a dish washing cloth yet that I like. It seems like every few years I buy a new bunch from wherever, and then as they get grungy I start throwing them out until I need to go buy another pack. I have yet to find the perfect potholder. I will be investigating some of the suggestions here. Often I use a folded up dish towel. I have a mitt but it seems like the thumb always ends up getting stuck in the food because of the way I grab the dish, so I prefer the folded dish towel method....See MoreWhat good detergent that can be used for minimally soiled clothing?
Comments (30)Gertie, I hear you about using less. I never use antimicrobial handsoap, except when we used to raise pigs. There was nothing else that would remove that smell on the hands. I often just use the universal solvent, water to clean counters, stove top, tables, etc. I listened to Teri Gross, on NPR, interview a science writer, Ed Yong. He says billions of microbes that live on and within our bodies affect digestion, immunity, body weight and general health. His new book is 'I Contain Multitudes.' It was fun to listen to. I know many of us have heard of some of this already, but very interesting. I am considering getting the book. Mamap, My Vaska tabs are the Lavender, I like the smell but haven't used them yet. I remember how much you liked them when @Rococo sent you some. The smell of lavender in theory should be one I love, hahah, but its not. Sometimes it works and sometimes, its too too something. But in the Vaska I will like it. The Le Blanc came in the mail today, I think the original is an unusual smell in the bottle, but I am looking forward to using it once it has been through a load of sheets. Regarding down wash, I splurged and bought the Le Blanc Down Wash and it came too. I am ready to wash my multitude of small couch comforters. I have 4 that we pose as couch potatoes. Then of course the bed comforter is down too, and will need a wash this next spring before I put it away for the summer....See More- 4 years agolast modified: 4 years ago
