Do some dishwashers need pre-rinsing and others don't?
Comments (6)I've never rinsed dishes before putting them in my DW, and I've had 3 or 4 different makes. If I wanted to do that, I wouldn't have a DW! The dishes come out spotless and, by the way, the heated dry is turned off; just the remaining heat in the DW air dries them. In addition, this month's Consumers has done a report on DWs, and they make a point of the fact that a) prerinsing is not necessary and b) is a tremendous waste of water....See MoreDishwashers: do I really need a sanitary rinse or cycle??
Comments (6)While a lot of older dishwashers didn't hit the temperatures needed for sanitizing the contents, I would hope that most of the current, high-end models do, special cycle or not. 170 is probably OK if your machine hits and holds it for a minute or two, from my reading. My decade-old Maytag does that without any special cycle. From one summary I just found Typical regulatory requirements (Food Code 1995) for use of hot water in dishwashing and utensil sanitizing applications specify: immersion for at least 30 sec. at 77°C (170°F) for manual operations; a final rinse temperature of 74°C (165°F) in single tank, single temperature machines and 82°C (180°F) for other machines. Many state regulations require a utensil surface temperature of 71°C (160°F) as measured by an irreversibly registering temperature indicator in ware washing machines. Recommendations and requirements for hot-water sanitizing in food processing may vary. The Grade A Pasteurized Milk Ordinance specifies a minimum of 77°C (170°F) for 5 min. Other recommendations for processing operations are: 85°C (185°F) for 15 min., or 80°C (176°F) for 20 min. Comments (7)Start out with the default setting (3?), and see if you get good results; eg., no spotting, no rinse aid residue (soapy taste on your dishes and glasses), drying ability, etc. You can play with the rinse aid setting if results aren't to your liking (adjust it up or down until you get the desired results). At one point Miele service had increased the setting on ours, finding that some of his customers felt the dishes came out drier, however, we felt it left our glasses tasting soapy so adjusted the setting back to the default. While troubleshooting an issue last year, he suggested trying a lower rinse aid setting (given the rinse aid in the tablet, though we tend to use the Miele tablets cut in half). We ended up adjusting it back up to the default again, as our glassware was too spotty with the lower setting. We always use salt in our machine (Somat or Miele). I think the tech had set our DW to soften the water when it reaches 6 grains of hardness or above. We have moderately hard water, and only need to add salt about once a year or so....See MoreIs there a dishwasher now days that dries dishes without rinsing aid?
Comments (28)I have the Kenmore Elite equivalent of your dishwasher. I use the equivalent of Pro Dry and I don't have rinse aid in the dispenser right now and everything comes out dry, no moisture on the inside. My extended dry cycle is 1.5 hours long and the little fan runs for an additional hour after that. Use Pro Wash cycle and not Normal cycle. The extended dry and little fan is one of the reasons why I selected my KitchenAid produced Kenmore Elite. Do you not realize energy standards have rendered heating elements almost useless for drying now days vs. 15 years ago?...See Morepkguy
