Roof line help with home addition

I'm adding 12ft out and 25ft across on the front right side of my house I'm worried about making the roof tie in with the existing roof and making it look right was hoping to get some help or maybe a few drawing

James, thanks for your reply. We were wondering about the chimney too. It vents the dining room fireplace and the hot water heater. We installed a 90% efficient furnace when we moved in, so that vents out the side wall of the basement, not out the chimney. I'm expecting that the architect will have to incorporate the chimney in the design and we may have to have it built higher to meet code. Yes, that's a gambrel roof on the far side. This house has a nice mishmash of architectural features. No one has ever really touched the original design which makes us cautious and nervous -- the original condition was one of the main attractions to us when we first saw the house. Our architect is an old house owner herself, so that should be a good sign. We are hoping to step the addition in on the left side (looking from the back) by at least a foot. My husband was trying to sketch a possible roof line that would join a smaller hip into the existing hip. His sketch looked pretty good. I was just hoping to see where someone had done something similar. I'm not sure yet what the architect envisions. I guess I need to be patient and let her do her thing. : ) Here's a picture of the side with the gambrel:

Looks good. I would "marry" the 2 sides of the house by adding shutters to the new windows. Consider adding the ivy to the right side, or removing it from the original house. (to my eye it would look better without) As others said before, the house proportions would be more attractive if the dormers were painted to blend in to the roof rather than stand out.

If you ignore the builder-grade detailing, its a late Victorian Queen Anne style house. The only unusual feature is the second front facing gable. Its impossible to say if it could meet the zoning height restriction without seeing a definition of "height", the topography of the site, the floor to floor heights and a scaled elevation drawing. With that information it would be a simple exercise to lower the slope of the roof until it meets the zoning restriction and see how it looks. In the meantime, assuming the width of the house is about 36 ft, lowering the roof slope from 12 in 12 to 10 in 12 would decrease the ridge height by 3 ft. Lowering the slope to 8 in 12 would lower the ridge another 3 ft. But the first thing I would do is lower the first floor ceiling to 9 ft and the second floor ceiling to 8 ft. I would also consider truncating the top of the main roof. I don't think it would be very noticeable on this house. One way or another it appears possible to build this house without corrupting the design. A Field Guide to American Houses Everyone should own this book. I don't think board and batten is the right style siding for your home. You've got too much going on with all the roof lines and uneven facade. What you've mocked up is appropriate and uniform, making the house look more uniform than it actually is. I love the mock up you did and I think the windows are appropriate for the style home. I wouldn't do a bow window, but a regular one. Bow windows are dated. I like your color scheme, but fear it won't look great with the brown roof. If the roof will need to be replaced anytime soon, then go for it. If not, you may want to look at other color options with a brown roof. A deep blue gray could look nice. If possible I would set the addition back from the front wall on the right side so that it clears the hip roof. If you use a gable roof for your addition it can tie into the front facing gable. If you do this just make sure the new gable stops short of the ridge of the existing front facing gable.

House has a hip style roof on the sides and the big roof peak over the front porch is built on top of the existing

You are in hge need of an architect this will be a big job to make look like the addition has always been there and that is what you want.

I would say lose the gable at the front right now it is too big for the house as it is and honestly creates issues that are not neccessary

Don't mess the the roof lines...either close in the front porch (you already own the foundation and roof, so you would get a nice room at a fraction of the cost), or give the addition it's own roof line (s).

My front porch is only 6ft wide so il be coming out with a new foundation about 5ft and 25ft down to the other corner on the right side...

I'm just really not sure how I want the roof....if I can keep what I got and add a peak into it and on the side without it looking funny or what....was hopping for ideas or maybe a drawing.il try to get a better picture of it today

We added a three car garage with bathroom and bedrooms over. It was a challenge to figure out how to get the new roof line work with the antique half Cape roof. Do what we did...hire a draftsman. She made the connection look seamless. As in the inspiration photo I posted, she started by designing a small connector, which then led into the new addition.
