Maybe the generic stuff isn't cream of tartar at all? I found a test on a site called Global Post. A "duh!" moment, because that's a normal use for cream of tartar. That is, it's an acid that's either used to stabilize eggwhites or activate the bubbling of baking soda. It's well worded (and it works), so I've quoted below: Test the potency of the cream of tartar, if you're uncertain, by stirring a half-teaspoon into a half-cup of warm water. Add a generous pinch of baking soda. If it foams vigorously, the soda and tartar will still work together effectively in your baking. If you're using the water test and don't get a reaction from your soda, repeat the test with lemon juice in the water. If the soda still doesn't foam, it's your soda that's the problem. Soda is much more susceptible to moisture in the atmosphere and loses its potency over time. Date your boxes of soda and replace them after a year if necessary.

Just because her mom is demanding it, doesn't mean your DH has to listen. After all, that's why he has sole custody. Kathline makes a good point that BM may be trying to validate her role as mommy. We go through this with my SD's mom. She was taking her daughter out of school early because it was her 'right' as a mom, even though the teacher and DH finally said something about it. She went on a rant that everyone was keeping her from her baby! Since then, she's gone through SD's homework folder (which she hadn't done before) and fills out any form that says 'parent signature' on it. If I were you, I would not engage in her rant or do as she demands. If you run to take her to the doctor every time BM says so (even just to document), then BM will continue to demand it. If SD is feeling better, then I'd write back and say "she seems to be fine now or getting better. If she gets worse, I'll notify you right away and take her for treatment." Does BM pay for any of the medical costs? My SD's mom is supposed to pay half but we've never gotten a penny. She hasn't demanded we take her to the doctor but in your case, I might have told her that if she was so worried about the health of her child, she wouldn't let the lack of insurance information stop her. I know I wouldn't as a mom. But telling her that is only going to make her more defensive of her role as a mom, then you are essentially calling her a bad mom and that will probably get a bad reaction. theotherside, if OP didn't say that everyone in the house has had the flu, I'd be more inclined to agree with you. If the symptoms don't go away or get worse in two days, I would definitely find out why, of course we were sick for three days and it was just the stomach flu. So, part of assessing whether it requires a trip to the doctor would include what everyone has eaten or what the source of the problem is. I'd look at the big picture first. (and anytime there is blood, it's a no brainer...)

I've read it is not good for cheesecake but I don't make cheesecake anyway. I have seen recipes for cheesecake using it in Cooking Light magazine, but I dunno if the recipes are any good. Probably not good in danish and the like either. I use it mostly to spread on bagels and toast and english muffins, in which case it tastes just fine. I top it with a dab of homeade jam, yum. Great with lox, since that has a strong taste so I don't miss the extra taste for that application. Fine with those dream eggs, because they were flavored with the herbs anyway, and the neufatchel just added a wonderful creamy texture, even with 1/3 less fat. Since cream cheese is almost pure fat, 1/3 less doesn't make it a diet food by any means, but I like it just as well if not better than cream cheese for what I use it for, so that's what I buy for the calorie savings. I don't mind it in party spreads either. It doesn't matter. Both DGS and I had a great time mixing up the batter. He got to taste the flour, the sugar, the butter, and all the other ingredients as they went into the mix. Yes. Dry wine can go bad once opened and those liqueurs like Baileys that have cream added. I've had them go bad (so if I plan on serving them, I buy smaller bottles) but I've got some liquor/liqueurs on my shelf in the kitchen that have been there a long time! And we have some opened bottles of whisky and Scotch that are remnants of the Christmas parties we used to have. DH just hasn't managed to work his way through them!
