big mess up on paths - question on bed now well below grade
Comments (7)Thanks for the feedback. Specifications were not in writing, sad to say. Together the architect and I went over them with the contractor. My husband intends to withhold payment of this portion of the project until we get this figured out. Pam29011 - you are so right. We have had heavy thunderstorms with torrential rains and lots of the path's rock sand whooshed away. the edging is 4" but they failed to restore the grade BEFORE they laid the path. it had gotten built up with the digging of the trench for the drainage pipes. Thankfully, I have the pics to show original, after pipes laid, after path laid. Apparently the contractor told DH that they cannot lay the path deeper without disturbing the drainage pipes. That means to me that they failed to place those pipes deep enough! Oh what a mess! Then, to top that off, the architect pointed out that they plopped the topsoil right over the compacted original clay soil and that this compacted layer needed to be tilled first. I never should have let the carpenters and their laborers to do the landscape work. They gave me a good story about how easy and quick this work would be and how we already had the bobcat rented and on site for the site work that needed to happen for the hvac location. Is this fatal? Will I not be able to grow anything due to compaction a few inches down? Now, instead of going to see our renovation with a happy spring in my step I get a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach....See Morei messed up, i need advice with lawn renovation
Comments (19)Hi everyone. I have a problem similar to Ty's, but until I got here and read this thread, I didn't know I'd done anything wrong. I was in fact roaming around the site trying to figure out what to do about the aphids on my honeysuckle, and why a small, thorny, rose?-bush was yellowing insanely. I came to this thread just to make sure I hadn't done anything Ty did, but I think I have. I'm a total Newbie (just signed up last night), I'm doing this alone with no actual from-scratch gardening experience except sowing seeds indoors, and a bit of pruning under my belt. My house plants are all quite healthy, and I've been known to be a recovery center for the ailing plants of friends and family members. Tackling an entire garden seemed slightly insane to me, but I thought it would be a rewarding challenge. I'm going to start a new thread with my specific issues, but I thought it best to begin here since this is where my panic began. I live in zip 11354/11357. What was once a lush lawn of kentucky blue, cared for by my parents and their hired landscapers, became overrun with weeds and zero grass over the 2 years since they moved to another home. They planned on selling this house quickly, so we weren't putting any money or time into landscaping here, but things have changed and now I'm trying to make it beautiful and my own, as I will probably be here for a few more years. I have virtually no garden tools (I know you'll yell at me for this) but I put down some weed-killer with a hose, then borrowed a garden claw from a family friend, and have spent the last 3 weeks tearing up the ground and manually pulling out roots of weeds, digging deep into the dirt with my hands to get as much root out as possible. I finally finished the area I'd like to use as a lawn, but have noticed little green sprouts popping up in the areas I'd tackled weeks ago. Do I go over it again with weedkiller? I've not planted anything new as I only finished tearing up the area last night. I will attempt to post pics of my before and after. There are far more issues happening around the yard right now, but I'll stick to this to keep it relevant to this post. Comments (57)Thought I'd update. Got Windows installed without a hitch, Dell talked me through it. I debated whether to put Win 7 in since I was starting from scratch but worried some of my software might not work Everything went well except I couldn't find drivers for some things such as my wireless adapter so couldn't get on line. Called Linksys and they spent over an hour trying to get the driver in and finally did. That was the best part, finally getting on line and getting hit with a zillion MS updates. I have misplaced or lost some software. We moved here in March and I could not locate my Office disk, wireless mouse/keyboard software and a few other things, might have gotten lost in the move. I'm most concerned about Office 07. I paid for it. Dell says they can't help and I could try contacting MS and see if they would do anything. I haven't moved any of my files back yet. Otherwise, I feel like the computer runs better than when it was new. Things seem different, have to fool with fonts and views, but I'm amazed how effortlessly the machine runs. This computer always seemed to have a few 'glitches' but I was used to it. Now it seems so fast and smooth (of course there isn't much running on it yet.) I don't know how to thank everyone for all the support and help I received. You are the best friends anyone could ever ask for. I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks! Thanks from the bottom of my heart... Jane...See MoreMecahnic messed up...how to rectify?
Comments (10)Oh, thank you Jakabedy! That is an excellent idea. Yes, they're a bonafide shop...I just think they're incompetent. We did get the paperwork for the engine, and we did see the old engine. It's quite obvious they put in the new one. We just got such a run around from them and I suspect that they knew we were coming to get my truck so they rushed and threw it in after it had sat there for a while. The rush is what messed it up. DH and I had 'words' over his cheapness and he admitted he screwed up. I don't usually gloat over the I told you so, but this time I did and he let me. We had a bit of a spat over using the trusted mechanic for the transmission, as he said that guy was one of the more expensive around...but we've used him in the past and he's EXTREMELY honest. I told DH I don't care what I have to pay him, I WILL NOT go thru this headache again of using a cut-rate contractor. Besides, DH told me that from now on, we go with my preference as he tends to be a cheapskate and it always costs us more in the long run. I mean, I am the queen of bargain hunters, but if it's something I can't DIY, I will hire the most knoweledgable, even if it costs a bit more. DH tends to go with the underdog every time, and every single time it ends up costing double....See Morenewenglandsara2
