Decor above Sofa
HelPPP!! I bought this shelf and just hung it up, but I absolutely hate it. Can anyone give me some suggestions for what to do with this area above the couch? I definitely want to incorporate some greenery to give the space some color. I wouldn’t mind getting another shelf but how long does it need to be? This one is obviously too short. The wall is almost 7 feet long. I’m going with more of rustic, cozy, neutral theme. I plan on getting sheer drapes also. TIA!!

Comments (12)Download an old map or print from a place that has meaning to you . (I used place where DH and I met.) Then print it out as an engineer print at Staples for a few dollars. Mount on particle board. You can also cut in pieces and decoupage a la RH. Hang. Comments (21)This is helping. I agree with the advice you’ve given so far. So, I need to introduce life into these rooms by adding accent colors. I’m stuck here too. I had water damage claim and as a result changed my brown/beige scheme to gray. I like the gray wall color but I’m intimidated by it. It was not an easy dealing with my insurance company and contractors so the project dragged on for months. Somewhere along the way it became less fun dealing with the change. One more thing - my best friend passed in her sleep 3 weeks ago at the age of 37. It’s been sad and depressing. I want and need color and life in these rooms and need to keep busy too. Any suggestions or comments are welcome. I like blues more than going with red accents. I also think I need to find a different rug for living room. Comments (6)From this image, the sectional looks squashed in the corner, so you would give better balance to the room if you pulled it away from the window wall and put the floor lamp in the corner. Then you can center the sofa on the wall and add large scale art work. Comments (1)It looks amazing already, it really does!!! In front of the radiator you can do a bench. But other than that leave it empty. Add some art that speaks to you. What do you like? Big family photo? A painting? Maybe just a mural art with molding around it to frame it out... so many options. I’d also add some new pillows with more color. 2 years agolast modified: 2 years agoI would go vertical with art rather than horizontal, to draw the eye up horizontal art will draw attention to the asymmetry of of the wall & sofa - go with vertical. Something around 3' wide and a little taller than width. Like this, shapewise:

2 years agoThanks to this forum, I gave up the idea of hanging shelves above the sofa. A painting or a diptych would work, but if you want that floor lamp (which I love actually), try searching the black-framed ones in pale colors, something like these:
