One-of-a-Kind Decor for Above the Bed
That Headboard Wall: It's the Perfect Spot for an Accent All Your Own
If you are still struggling with what to add over your bed to make it visually appealing, you may want to think outside the box. There is a lot more out there than framed art or photographs. Whether you are looking for a subtle accent or a big punch of color, let your creativity run wild and show off a design aesthetic that is an expression of yourself, and truly one of a kind. Like these:
Create a traveled, rustic or country feel by bring in a natural element like this Tobacco Basket from Terra Cottage in Atlanta. You can easily hang wicker or wooden bowls and baskets on a wall. Try one large piece or group a bunch of smaller ones.
Another Zen-like oasis created using sculptural art that has a natural finish reminiscent of rocks.
Personalize the space above your bed with a gallery of treasured and inspirational pieces in different sizes. So look through the boxes of your stuff you never knew what to do with, and try hanging some of the pieces in a group. Mix and match!
Tip: When I am building a wall display I always lay it out in front of me on the floor, then snap a photo of it so I can keep recalling the original design as I hang it up.

Create an unusual design using 3D PVC wall stickers, as in this bedroom in a model of Michelle Kaufmann's modular Breezehouse.
Pull in color through frames. Place fabric pieces of the bedding set into frames and hang them as a group. The scrolling wall frames used in this photo are "Black Wall Frame, Set of 2," from Pier 1.
What do you collect? Can it be hung on a wall? The secret is to go big; don't just hang one or two tiny things. For example, one or two of these glass art pieces wouldn't have the same effect as the dozen you see.
Note: If you live in earthquake country, skip heavy objects that could fall off the wall during a shaker.

Art can be anything, if used intentionally. When using small pieces, they look better in a group because that adds more weight. Think outside the box about what you can hang from the wall. A plate collection can be a nice focal point.
Add a hat collection. These Bamileke Feather Headress Juju Hats make beautiful wall decor.
Use something authentic to the theme you are incorporating, like this saddle in a country or old-rodeo themed room.
If you are going to place a large mirror over your bed, find one with personality; intricate moldings, sparkle, rich color, or whatever befits the style you want for the space. This mirror is the Mansard Mirror from Restoration Hardware.
Use a large map over a bed. If you are a traveler, you can add flags to all the places you have been. This one is a PREMIÄR Map Picture from IKEA.
For a bold infusion of color, carry the color from the bed up the wall with framed scrapbooking paper from the craft store. Repeating the color over and over in the room creates a strong color theme.
Not looking for adding color, but want drama? Try sculptural art; there are a ton of finishes and shapes to choose from. If it is a small piece, use multiple pieces together. The sculptural cut mirror pieces in this space add glitz creating a rock star room when everything else is neutral.
Vinyl stickers allow you to easily add a romantic phrase to read every time you walk into your bedroom.
Make your own art with canvas boards and paint. You can stencil on a design or freehand it. Use any colors you've been wanting to add to your room.
Frame a vintage piece of clothing. This vintage bathing suit is perfect for an old-fashioned beach-themed bedroom.
If you are not ready to commit to hanging any decor, try add a floating shelf behind your bed. You can place unique objects on it, photos, whatever; then change it out when you feel like it.
