Is the pandemic going to change your spring buying?
Comments (115)The difference I see between garden purchases at big box (Lowe's, Home Depot) stores and independent garden businesses around here (NJ) is the availability of curbside pick up at the independent places. This is not a thing at Lowe's or Home Depot. Also, big box stores (from what I read in the newspaper, under the headline, "Is Mulch Essential?"), are way more crowded. Yesterday the sheriff here raided Lowe's for lack of social distancing and served a notice to stay closed until a health-and-safety plan had been approved by the county. By this morning a plan had been approved--it is essentially the company-wide plan announced weeks ago, but with an explicit limit on the number of customers inside the store at one time. That store has curbside pickup, but not for the garden-center items I need. I had already planned to expand vegetable and cutting-flower plantings, and because of thin, rocky soil almost all of my gardening is in raised beds. Thus, I need soil mix for the raised beds, which is not available for curbside pickup even though they have plenty. The reason seems to be that it can't be shipped, and the ordering process is the same for both shipping and pickup. The independent store that I rely on for hard-to-find things doesn't officially offer curbside pickup, but I'm fairly confident that if I order and pay over the phone, they'll be happy to load everything in the back of my car anyway....See MoreLife and Death amid a Pandemic
Comments (97)Thank you, Pink for reminding me that the most heartwarming, special service I have been to was also a delayed service. It was truly a celebration of life. I have an amazing support network-- the kindness and love I have received here, from family and friends and (perhaps surprising to some) on FB has been so very comforting. My dad was very well known in the community and also in a large sports organization. He has touched so many and it helps to hear from them all. I will share more about my dad at some point. Honestly, I am spinning a bit these days. I am still working in the early mornings and then spending the rest of the day helping to make arrangements, supporting my mom and preparing her for a move. It's a lot-- but I have a stream of so many great memories and as I look to my family, I see pieces of dad in all of us. That helps too. Love to you all-- thank you so very much....See MorePlease help with ideas for pandemic wedding!
Comments (31)Most counties require a witness to the wedding and that person also signs the official wedding certificate to be filed at the court house. Side note: In the eyes of the court, a pair is not considered legally married until the wedding certificate has been filed. While searching my family's history, I found 2 wedding dates for my grandmother; one date on the day of the ceremony and a second date two weeks later when it was filed. Before automobiles, Pastors often collected wedding papers and went to the court house maybe once or twice per month to file the wedding certificates. There was a hazard: If something happened to the Pastor in the interim and the papers never filed; That can cause problems at later times when probating an estate or other legal matters....See MoreHoliday meals during COVID
Comments (27)Like Plllog, it's the holidays for us now. We did Passover via Zoom when it wasn't clear how long social distancing would last. It has been very strange going through the High Holidays without being able to gather for prayer. Our congregation has done a wonderful job of dealing with having only on-line services as best as possible, especially the cantor. Our kid's are all within driving distance - the closest lives a few miles away and the others are around 100 miles. They are all serious about social distancing - in some cases they have medical reasons in their families to be extra careful. As it has become clear how long this would last, we decided that it was okay to see each other. It has helped the families to at least have a change of scenery for a bit and we have been able to give the parents a break by taking care of the grandkids for a few days every few weeks. We had a family gathering for Rosh Hashanah dinner and we are planning on another one for Sukkot. During Sukkot, one eats meals outside in a sukkah - a temporary structure built for the holiday. So, on another night we will have another couple over. We had an outside brunch at their house this summer and they are people I trust to have been socially distancing. If getting together required flying, I'd be very hesitant to do it....See Moreplllog
