My fireplace mantle and artwork
Comments (22)nhb, thanks, we like the details in this room too. The house was built in the 1920s and the woodwork in this room is mahogany. It's the only room in our house that has such nice trim, though. gwb and sheesh, thanks for noticing my bunny. It's actually a mask that we bought during our recent trip to Italy. The artist's shop was one we went to just because it was in a book we had, not intending to buy "one of those tacky Italian masks" -- LOL -- the masks were amazing! I had to have the bunny. The wire cage thing... I guess you call it a finial? Um, more leftover Christmas decorations -- it had been empty but I was going to fill it with ornaments/balls for Christmas -- didn't have enough to fill it, but then I kinda liked it partway full. And yes, it's almost Feb. and they're still there! I think I'll keep them there. So far the general consensus is to keep the paintings the way they were and keep the candleholder there by itself... at least until I find something better! If I could find some pottery, maybe 3 squatty pots in various sizes that picked up the dark greens and purple tones from that painting, that might make me happy......See MoreBuying "art" and buying "Art"
Comments (27)Thanks Rosie. That painting is a pleasure for me on so many levels - the crazy coloring, the "art" labeling, the primitiveness... I am way too constrained to create that freely. And then there is the personal - knowing all DH was going through at the time and his very surprising decision to try painting for respite. It inspires me. For the OP, reflect on what is appealing to you about those museum pieces you like. Crystalize that as best you can. Any gallery would be happy to help you discover works you love, for a price. If that price is prohibitive, try 'lesser' galleries, student art shows, resale shops, art fairs - just look and trust yourself to respond. Let yourself make a mistake or two, it's the only way to learn what you really love. And yes, framing can make all the difference....See MoreOT.....Is the art of writing passe' ?
Comments (44)I agree also. If you open a gift and thank the giver in person, then usually a further thank you shouldn't be neccessary. However, sometimes if the gift is simply beyond wonderful, an additional note ..."I just wanted to thank you again for the amazing gift. ......etc." One of the most thoughtful thank yous I have received was from two young neighborhood boys. They were going door to door selling chocolates so their troop could take a trip to NYCity. I told them that I really didn't need the chocolate ( or the calories !) but that I'd like to contribute to their trip , and I gave them a generous donation. Many months later I received a handmade card in the mail. Not only did they thank me for my donation, but they also included a description of the highlights of their NYC trip and included photos . The next time I saw their Mom I made sure to stop and congratulate her on raising such thoughtful sons. I know that she probably coached them on the card, but ultimately they sent it and were there when I gave kudos to their Mom and to them. I could see they were very proud of each other ......and I believe that's where the life lesson is learned....See More1925 arts and crafts wall color
Comments (37)Unless you totally hate the look, your home, particularly the dining room, is where I would splurge on some of that period wallpaper. But I adore Art Deco. You can also do suede or faux leather textures with paint or get suede or faux leather wallpaper for the bottom. I'd do the bottom wallpaper and the top wall I'd paint with a gorgeous wallpaper border so that I could hang my art on the upper wall. That top left look that Fori posted . . .
