asymmetrical windows in a square dining room

Hello! Oh if someone could help me. These asymmetrical windows drive me crazy. My dining room is a perfect square so I believe the buffet needs to stay against the biggest wall where it currently is. Any ideas on window treatments? Or furniture placement? In these pictures I moved the center of the table to be between the windows however then it’s not lined up with the small entrance to our kitchen . I know I’d had to move the chandelier if I kept this setup. Please advice, I would be so grateful!

Sometimes you just have to go with it. Move the table back to the center. I've got asymmetrical windows in my bedroom. I did draperies and just left off the finial at the end of one rod. I don't even notice it. However, I do have about 3 inches between the molding and the wall. Your molding goes right to the wall. I still think this could work. Just make sure the draperies aren't too full. Try some ready made linen ones, or you could use roman shades.

Just browsing and can't resist. It sounds really nice, P Swiss, as do Annie's ideas. My initial thought was that the sideboard (assuming no hutch) could be used as the base for the TV. It's pretty commonly done now and would allow some simplification. Regarding placing furniture for the view, every time you walk or glance into the living room, you'll be able to enjoy it. Perhaps including a seat or two near the windows specifically intended for enjoying it close up would do? This would allow you to arrange the rest of the furniture to optimize the room's other functions. Have you thought of having your dining there? Do you need 4 seats daily, or would a drop-leaf table that seats 2 when dropped do? A symmetrical arrangement of a table with a pair of chairs facing each other can be very charming, and inviting, in front of a window.

Thanks for the responses folks...I do need to learn to think outside the box. Delta Breeze - I'm planning to put a tall hutch to the right of the front door, and my writing desk/hutch to the left of it. I do like the idea of the bookcase to the right of the window. I'm going to move it though, center the table and see how that idea works. I think the right side chair will be too cramped. I'm beginning to think the table being off-center from the window might be okay. Les917 - I had thought by doing the lopsided curtain/swag I could make an illusion that the table was centered over the imaginary window! The table would stay where it is now, it would just look like there was more window to the left. I love all the ideas you offered, and I do hope to swag the light once the furniture placement is set. This isn't really a dining room; it's just a breakfast/tea area so I can take advantage of the one bright, sunny window during our long, S.A.D., North Dakota winters. There will be a small eat-at island in the kitchen and the "real" dining room will be set up out on the four-seasons sunporch...eventually! GardenWebber (Love the name!) I think you're right about the table being too close to the wall. Here's a poor drawing I have of the room. It shows the dimensions. It's rather narrow and cramped. The room is just under 12' wide, about 24' long. The opening between the L/R and kitchen is just over 8' wide. The wall with the short bookcase is about 40" wide. The area between the front door and the corner of the south wall is 30" wide.

You have lots of nice things in your space. I agree that the sign above the fireplace needs to be replaced. I would ignore the tall walls and concentrate on the people space. Floor and table lamps would be the easiest way to ground the space and help break up all the horizontal lines. You can put a console table on the short wall, with a lamp, vases or baskets to add some texture and color. Do you have curtain panels on the windows? That will help make the space look cozier as well.

There really is nothing farmhouse about your home's style. The roof is Spanish. From the front, the board and batten and casement windows are contemporary. From the side, the house looks like it was a Garrison Colonial with the overhang filled in at one point. The solid wall makes it feel more contemporary. The extra trim around the windows look like they were added on at some point. This is a good example of an authentic, typical farmhouse. If you were to remove the front porch, it would be a typical Colonial with an addition on the back. This shows the overhang of a Garrison Colonial. Here, the entrance is in the middle rather than on the side. If you're curious as to what your house was look like when it was originally built, perhaps you can get a copy of the plans from the office that issues building permits in your county. You would more than likely be able to find elevation drawings that shows how the house was meant to look.

Since you’re centering everything on the windows, just have the chandelier moved. And try rotating the table 90° so that it’s centered to the doorway and the windows. Although, really, it’s not a big deal, at all, that it be in line with the door to the kitchen. It’s not even a small deal.

Yes, two panels on each window. Make sure you mount the rods above the window trim - I usually go half way between the top molding and the ceiling. When going with ready made draperies, just get as close as you can. Ikea has some nice linen draperies pretty cheap.

From the photos it appears that your table should run the other direction, lengthwise along the windows. I don't think the asymmetry would be as noticeable that way. Does the buffet fit anywhere else in the room? I wouldn't use drapes on the windows since you would lose so much of the light from the corner window.

It would be helpful to have a drawing of the room showing the measurements and the location of doors and windows. But from your photo it looks like your table is too long for the room. Can you take out a leaf?

It would be helpful to see the room layout with dimensions, but based on the pictures, it looks like the table should go in the other direction being long wise in front of the windows. Find another spot for the buffet. Romans would work well for your windows. If you prefer drapes, have the rod go almost up to the crown. Find finials that are flat so that you can have an end cap on side nearest the wall and it won't be noticeable.

You could do a double draw on the left window and a single draw to the left on the right one.

But really I think it would look better to have an identical double draw on both. If you use a semi-sheer white curtain it won't block a lot of light on the right side.

Will the buffet fit on the wall right of the kitchen door? Diagonal table placement can work; after all, if you've got asymmetry just go with it.

Yes I considered a diagonal table but didn’t know how off the wall that would be considered but the above pictures make it look ok. Thank you for all of us input!

I agree to put the table the other way given the windows however my buffet is so big the only wall it fits on is the one it’s on now which would not allow to make the table horizontal. That’s why I’m having such a hard time. I appreciate your input

Try the table in the other direction and post the photos so we can see. a Table on the diagonal would drive me crazy.

It's more important to have the table the right direction. The buffet doesn't have to be centered on the wall - maybe it can fit further down. Or move it to another room.
