shower curtain or glass enclosure

I know this has been heavily debated but I am still waiting for a aha moment to make the decision! New construction we are empty nesters but assume grand babies with be bathing at our condo. I dread the thought of reaching around glass to give a child a bath but know it’s a much more upscale look. Can anyone talk me into one way or another?! Thank you!

That decision can be delayed until you have a clear idea of your needs. Wait until you are living in the space and then decide if you really would prefer a door. Until then, use a shower curtain.

Make sure to take pictures of the structure before the backer board gets installed. Also request that bracing be installed between studs for installation of grab bars.

After staying in a hotel last week with a walk in shower approximately 36" deep with a shower curtain, I strongly advise against a shower curtain. Assuming your bathroom will have an exhaust fan to help ventilate the moisture from the shower, you have to expect the shower curtain to be impacted by the moving air. The warm shower air is drawn up over the curtain into the fan. And of course more air needs to be drawn into the shower, so how does it get in there? That's right, it blows the curtain into the shower allowing the air to go under the curtain. Trying to shave my legs with a wet shower curtain sticking to my legs and arms and behind is very unpleasant. When I redo my master shower I will definitely be going with a glass door and/or fixed panel.

Oh this is a HUGE problem for me. I hate the way curtains look, but I hate the way glass doors/tracks have to be maintained. My Nana actually put a clear plastic liner and rod above and inside of the glass shower doors to keep it from getting icky, but you didn't see the curtain from the outside. I dunno... DH and I are getting ready to build in a year or two and we might put in a conch-style shower; you go into a tile entrance and go around a corner to a mosaic'd room. No doors, no curtains, just private, big and luxurious. But a lot of tile to clean... Right now in our guest bath we have a curved rod and curtain. Our master bath has doors. I try a different cleaner every month trying to find something suitable! I've hear Spot X is IT, but I can't find it! Blessings, Haley

I've never had a glass sliding door but I recall as a child my brother and I had a habit of slamming the pocket door in the bathroom, just about every time we used it. Our parents told us not to but we'd forget and slam it anyway. Is there anything on those sliding glass doors to keep a kid from slamming it open / closed? Just something I'd want to consider before choosing that option.

I find it easier to wash a shower curtain once every two months that a large piece of glass every day.

It is a bath shower combo in the guest bathroom. We have just a shower in the master

Great! I was hoping you would say that. So I recommend a shower curtain for the bath/shower combo. It'll be way easier for when your grandchildren come over. Shower curtains can be very stylish. I LOVE the turkish towel shower curtains. Basically they are a huge turkish towel/blanket made into a shower curtain, and you put a liner with it.

Very smart of you to do shower only in the master.

Of course ask your contractor to put the proper blocking in the wall to support future glass if you decide to do that later. And also ask them to put blocking for grab bars in the master.

we're doing a curtain until we figure out how / if this particular tub / shower combo bathroom will be used. As stated, make sure it's easy to do after, but start with the less intrusive and less expensive solution!

You have all talked me in to a curtain for now with the option of glass in the future with proper blocking. Should I be worried about drilling in to the toilet for a shower curtain rod? Will that be hard to repair in the future?

You can use a tension/pressure shower curtain rod that is easy to install and easy to replace. You can get a straight one or a bowed one that makes the shower area a little larger.
