Help a (Clueless) Guy Decorate his Small 1930s Living Room
Comments (81)unfortunately the room is too narrow to have the sofa facing the fireplace. I'm pretty much stuck with that being there. Great thoughts about the coffee table, I keep trying to love the trunk but its just not happening. Oh well it was only $20 so maybe its Scouts new toy box. Interesting point about the rug - admittedly I'm not too polished on the rules of design so I end up having to learn along the way. I think I'll try a bigger rug. Also I'm going to hold off on the TV. Maybe once I finish the kitchen reno and use the room more otherwise I'm fine with just going to the basement which I'm also decorating slowly but surely. Its becoming my favorite room in the house and has another massive fireplace which makes it so warm and cozy. I'll post some pics and get everyone kind help AFTER I vacuum the couch (yellow dog & brown microfiber - UGH!!).......See MoreNeed help w/great room - decor + drapery PICS
Comments (15)Okay, that helps seeing the other angle. Now, remember that doing this on a monitor is kind of tricky, because perspective and proportion can be hard to judge. Here is what I would try. The first thing I would do is paint the small wall that the fireplace is on (just the little angled one) in a rich rusty fall red. Take the "H" and mount it above the tv, centered, and then add a wood curlique appliques on either side, painted black. Something like this, that will pick up on the shape of the arms of the couch and loveseat. You can get them at most home centers and some of the larger craft stores. Or, iron ones will work if you can find those. first ones on the page Take the couch and put it directly across from the fireplace, at the same angle. Put the loveseat to the left of the couch, at a right angle. Get a table between them to anchor the arrangement, with a lamp if you can. Once you do that, your little black chest may have to move. You could try it under the window, and add a colorful bench cushion on top. A fabric or leather ottoman, maybe round, would be a nice addition to work as a table and additional seating when you need it and would pick up on the curves of the furniture. I don't mind the clock being on that wall, and in fact I think you need some taller things there to balance the fireplace and the windows with the drapery when you get it. What I would do is once you move the furniture, take a look at that wall. You might add some floating shelving that is arranged in some kind of staggered fashion with the clock as a part of the grouping. That would be a place to add some touches of color with vases, art leaning on the shelves, etc. If there is room below that, you could add a console table and lamp there. As for your counter stools, I would do them in a brown-black, that would bring out the colors in the cabinetry but not be as strong as a solid black. Colorful cushions would be a nice addition if you like. Then bring in the drapery/window treatments in the dining area. Add a throw and a few pillows. Maybe a runner on the dining table with some red. If you are worried about the fall leaves feeling out of place year 'round, look for some berry stems in the reddish color, or some tall orchid stems in that color (oncidiums or cymbidiums would be nice). Mix in some grassy stems and a couple of larger green leaves, and it will work for you....See MoreHow to place sofa/TV w/ awkward layout of kitchen-living-dining room!
Comments (25)Sofa on long window wall will look and feel the best and make the room inviting when you walk into it from the front entry. TV on the short wall opposite the sofa; pay to have the wiring redone and move on......you cannot make the space bigger but you can make work well....PS what and where do the stairs go? Do you have an upstairs? What are the dimensions of the living/dining room and kitchen....See MoreWhere did I go wrong?! Decor for a formal living room w/ pics
Comments (25)Well anything could be changed out if you don't like something about it. But is it mainly the wall color you don't like? Easiest IMHO to change that. Go with something less contrasty with the other colors in the room. More beige. I had the same problem many years ago when I moved into my first house. I took a lot of time carefully choosing what I thought was the ideal wall color. My dad was visiting helping me get the house ready. He painted the whole room while I was at work. I came home to the "pepto bismol" room. And I could not really repaint after all that work my dad did for me. That's actually when I first started hanging out on this forum, trying to figure out how to make it less of a problem. So if you can't or really don't want to repaint, the other approach is to fill the room with some accents and more colors similar to the wall color. Something gold or yellowish. You have a lot of blue, which is the contrasting color, which only serves to highlight the wall color. Since your art has an oriental vibe, ever thought about shoji screens for the smaller windows? I wouldn't sweat the proportion of things, that can often appear off on the standard quick photo shot folks take for advice on here. Same can be said for the color of the walls. But you mention quite a bit about not liking it. Overall I LOVE your room!...See Moreevelynwoo
