Help me decorate living room (see pics)
Comments (12)Thank you for the links! I just painted the room that blue, after switching from a warm color palette to a cool one (the whole room was brown and sage, and way too dark for me suddenly!) I know the TV cabinet needs to go. It was a knotty pine Ikea one that I painted myself and did the doors to mask the video games behind it. I really want to put something narrower and longer there, like a buffet, but I'm still looking. I looked so long for chairs to go with that couch. I sat on a million chairs and read a million reviews, but at the end of the day, wanted something that was comfy and family friendly. The white chair is now the one everybody fights over at TV time! I love that the slipcovers are washable. I am considering dying the piping to 'dress it up' a little, and want to find a colorful throw to make it not so casual. The slate gray pillows were my feeble attempt to tie it into the couch color. I do want to put some sort of plants in there; maybe when the baby is a little older. I hesitate also because I kill every green thing I've ever had. The other sort of obstacle is that the other side of this room is my dining room. Or dining 'area' I guess. It is all one big room and a pain to decorate/arrange....See MoreCan someone help me decorate my formal living room?
Comments (32)Nosoccermom, I'm actually sitting in the room now and had to move one of the chairs to the other side of the sofa because I couldn't see the tv from either one. I am not at all comfortable. However, I didn't buy these chairs to be comfortable and sat on for hours at a time. They are just for our office and are rarely used. I don't know how much time we'd spend in here if I had to sit on this chair. (Yes, I could sit on the couch with my husband but like oakleyok said, we like having our own space). My husband also was concerned that it's not really set up for interaction with the chairs there since everyone seems to be looking at the tv, not at eachother. He's still hoping for a sofa and loveseat or the sectional. I feel like the room has definitely opened up like this but if we're not comfortable watching tv, we will rarely sit in here - sad but true. I am at a stand still. I like the look but not for tv or talking. Maybe it can just look pretty. :) To answer your question, we do use it for watching tv. I'd say DH spends about 25% of his tv watching time in here and my oldest spends an hour or two after school in here reading or watching tv. I don't come in here on my own. I prefer the family room because it's off the kitchen and I can see everything that's going on if I am cooking/getting a snack for the kids or any of the other million things I have to do in there. I also hate looking at the old furniture in here and that will hopefully be solved soon. To answer the question about the sectional size, it was 120 inches long and 84 inches on the chaise side. So 10 feet by 7. The room is 19 x 12. The sectional would actually give me a little bit more room than the couch and loveseat that is presently in the room. It would take up much more room than a couch and 2 chairs....See MoreCan decorate a cake but not my living room! Plz help!(pics)
Comments (31)Kcc - Don't know whether or not you're in the minority here, but you are not alone! If you're concerned that the gray is drab and will make you feel claustrophobic, listen to your instincts. Just because gray is the chic color of the moment does not mean that it's right for you or your room. Gray is a very difficult color. It will make a room look like the interior of a submarine if the furnishings and other colors are not close to perfectly done. In addition, you have that large beautiful window. What kind of climate do you have? Gray days, rainy days? Imagine being in a home with dogs and a small child on a gray drizzly day with gray walls (and brown drapes) framing the view. I would paint all the walls, except for that nice red one in your dining room, a rich, deep cream - or, as others have suggested, a gold that would look good with your tan furniture. Those colors would keep the room bright and cheerful. Are you very attached to that rug? Could you put it somewhere else in your home? IMO it's the one element that's throwing everything else off. The colors and style don't coordinate with the rest of your furnishings and wall colors. Could you try going with bare floors for awhile? Then eventually get an oriental rug that contains all your colors - gold and tan and red and some blue/green. This would pull everything together and warm up the space. And it would also better hide what the doggies and baby might do to it!...See MoreIdeas for accent pillows & decor to go w/drapes & rug in L. Room
Comments (26)lynartish, thanks for taking the time to "photoshop" in the pillows. As for the lighting in the room, that is the result of poor quality photo taking from my phone. I turned the lights on to help show of each one. Just a little bit of info: The window treatments are "set up" to keep "gawkers" from looking into our home. Unfortunately, our street has become extremely busy over the years, and we get a lot of people going by the front and there really isn't much distance between the front of the house and them. When we have company, we typically do pull back the sheers along with drapes. Apple pie order, I like the idea of repositioning/extending the drapery rods. If any of you ladies have photos of your living room, I'd love to see them. Maybe I could steal a tip or two from you....See More18florence
