Omega Flex Gas Line Corrosion

Our plumbing contractor for a new construction used Omega Flex gas lines through out the building. when we finally received our occupancy permit and wanted to turn on the gas a few months after the gas installation was complete the whole system was leaking almost every where near every connector. When Omega Flex came and took multiple samples of the pipes and sent to a lab they said it was chlorine damage. They claim that the small amount of chlorine in the household soap used to leak check the lines has cause every bit of the pipe to develop holes and leak. Has anybody experienced any thing like this before?

What a terrible situation. Hopefully someone is going to step up on a warranty claim for this for you.

That sounds like complete nonsense. Total and complete BS!

CSST stands for corrugated Stainless Steel tubing.

Stainless steel doesn't get holes in it due to small amounts of chlorine - or even large amounts of chlorine - otherwise my kitchen sink, my washing machine tub, the dishwasher, and many other things would be swiss cheese.

These are gas lines, they are expected to withstand most common household chemicals and environmental contaminates without having catastrophic failure. That's why gas lines are made of stainless steel, and not, say, paper mache. Lord help us all if a little Palmolive will eat holes in it. Imagine the commercials: Madge- "You are soaking in it... but don't worry, It softens your gas lines while you wash the dishes" - and then the house explodes at the end.

What's more, standard soap doesn't contain chlorine.

There's something else going on.

Specifically I'd look at the retainer clip that was used. The corrosion looks like it's right at where the retainer clip was.

Here's the thing... you need to get a pro, probably an attorney, because this is going to get very expensive.

Good post reference for the risers but their price is too high. I got 2 from local piping supplier for 48.00 each. 3/4 x 3 ft 3/4. I decided to install the PE in PVC and only put it 12 inches down since I will be installing it under a poured slab. I will take the 3 feet jobs back and get a flex with a shorter iron stub part. Will this still be code since the danger of digging will be less due to installing the line in PVC and under concrete? I can use the flexable riser 12 inch iron and 18 inch PE with stab fitting.

I have the same issue. I had to put a door base cabinet next to my range too. I made it narrow and will put things like cookie sheets in it. My cabinets are deeper than average. The gas valve will be at the back of it. I measured my arm vs the how far back in the cabinet the gas valve is located...There is no way I will ever use this valve because I will only be able to reach it with the tips of my fingers.... I also have a shut off directly below the area in the basement that is much easier access except for running down the steps. Interesting on the flex vs rigid. There is no way I can get rigid out of the cabinet and over to the range...just not enough room to get in the giant pipe wrench. I don't have the range yet...to be delivered in the next couple of weeks. Hope I don't run into problems with the flex vs rigid issue. I think the valve would have been better off behind the stove. I think we are going to have to modify the valve in the cabinet so I can reach it better....or at least service people can reach it....great. Something else to think about.

"So the pierce type is just considered bad?" They are not code approved. The lack of any actual seat results in them rarely closing correctly. They are also not made of copper, and that causes long term electrolytic corrosion problems. "Also Brickeye- What can I do in that situation? It is what it is? should it be changed? Would the key on and off valve for the starter be considered the valve in same room? If you have a hole in the floor and an extended valve key to shut off the gas valve it is considered "in the same room". It is not the physical location of the valve so much as that it is operated from the same room as the appliance.

Thank you very much for the comments, I will talk to the PB about the concerns. The chlorinator is just to the left of the left skimmer on the second last picture. The caretaker lines come up behind the waterfall, you can see a little black spot on a couple of pictures between the 2 mounds of dirt thats the 8 port valve. Will get a couple of extra pictures tomorrow Lots of us down here, from a town of 18,000, last year they had a golf tourny here in Phoenix for everyone that wintered down here, there was 48 people for golf, more for dinner.
