I don't know why you would be dissuaded to use Evening Blue. Not to light and not too dark. I think it will work well with the browns and gray of the new roof.

@houssaon Yes we will keep the shakes, but paint them. Would you do them the same color as the body of the house or something different? I think my struggle was also that I don't like a two toned blue look or blue/gray. It feels like too many colors, but feel compelled for those areas to be a different shade than the body. I feel like the two tone is better done with two neutrals so I am perplexed on whether that is the right color for the house architecture.

The blue is beautiful. Stop worrying about what other people think, those are the ones that would choose beige, just to be “safe.”

Anyway, I AM wondering if those other colors are staying? Are you changing anything else?

I found another blue someone was considering for their house.

Stick with your gut on the blue. I'm a minimalist with exteriors but I think you do need 2 tones. Lighter for the 3 peak areas, darker for the rest, white trim, stained wood door. Go with 2 blues in the same family and shades that are toned down. Hire a designer to help if you need fine-tuning.

How about a more colorful option? I like this green for the body and blue in the gable ends.

It is difficult if not impossible to be sure what others see on their compute screen is the accurate color.

I suspect it is the brown in the shingles that is prompting negative feedback on the Evening Blue. A lot of people seem to prefer greens with brown.

Lay a panel with the Evening Blue color atop the roof and take a close look in full daylight and in evening twilight. If it works for you, go for it. If not, you might consider picking a gray from the roofing and go with that color as your siding. Alternately, you might consider white with either dark charcoal bray or even black for all your trim.

White garage doors look a little cheap and call attention to themselves. Try painting the garage door the majority color or a shade darker. The extension on the left with the basketball hoop looks a little precarious. Try an arbor running under it going the entire length of the garage, with pronounced brackets under it, to make it look more connected and deliberate.. Yes, you will have a vine to prune, but maybe you can grow grapes and start a winery.

Do not listen to other people. This is your house. If you like the blue it will be beautiful and the design can totally manage that colour. Also the shakes the painted the same colour would view a different colour because of the texture. I think it would be beautiful. Barb

A couple of visuals...one blue and the other green. If you are able, get larger size siding panel samples to view. You can leave the shakes as is and IF you decide later that you don’t like the look, paint them later.

Whenever I am trying to choose colors, I consider where I want the impact to be.

I think part of the reason you are having a hard time deciding is because the design of your house now has conflicting focal points. One focal point is the side where the roof peaks over the garage and the other is the side of the house which is the porch and entrance. This almost splits the house in half visually. We usually want one focal point with supporting characters to achieve design harmony.

If it were my house, I would want to downplay the boldness of the garage side of the house and play up the entrance a bit. I think the blue would look great on your house, but I would match the gable peaks on the left side (as facing the house) to the overall wall color. I may use a contrasting color on the gable over the front porch to let it pop out visually. A bold front door color will help, but won't carry the design on its own.

I like the idea someone mentioned about making the garage doors wood. That would help them recede and become more harmonious with the rest of the house, but any darker color would help in that regard.

Cool colors and dark colors tend to recede (fall back into space) while warm colors and light colors tend to advance (come forward visually). If you remember these rules of color theory and can imagine or visualize the interaction of color on your house, it may help you decide or at least narrow down your choices.

I would go to Sherwin Williams with a piece of your roof if possible and find some blues that work with it. From there, buy sample pots and try them on your house itself. then look at the colors at different times of the day.

I think the blue is beautiful. And as someone else said, I would paint the shakes the same color. They will stand out because of the difference in the texture. In my opinion, if you paint with 2 colors the house will appear way too busy. Your eye will be bouncing all over the place. Use a nice crisp white on the garage and trim to accent the architectural details and use a pop of color on your front door. Maybe a nice pale yellow or blue.

I'm with Lake1114....I'm a sucker for a medium to dark base with a bright pop of color on the door and ONLY the door, so that your eyes are drawn to it. Mine is a sunflower-ish yellow and the rest of my home is grey and white. Keeping the garage doors in the same color paint as the home itself is always my preference. I have never understood highlighting them with white...as if they are a feature or trim?! I also like Lizzy Ls comment about laying a large sample of the house paint on the roof to get a really close look at how well they match up. Happy painting!

Agree with ( barbara McGrath ) -- your house, your taste should prevail. Personally like the blue you're considering.

One idea that might be worthy of consideration: Add black fascia between the brown and the blue.

One color on all shakes and a bright door, preferable a nice red (not too burgundy) or a deep hot pink. A few white window boxes would add a lot.

You have opened up a can of worms. When you ask a platform like this for help, be prepared for a lot of different ideas, you are probably more confused now than before. The best advice someone has given, is to go with your gut. At the end of the day you have to live with color, so go with your gut feeling.

I agree with others. Right now the house doesn’t look cohesive, too many colours.
I’d go with blue and white trim. Keep the garage door same colour as the house colour. Add some warmth with a cedar coloured front door, and some large box shaped cedar planters strategically placed on your way to the front door. I’d consider adding skylights, below each narrow window, to the roof of the front porch. It appears no matter what you do there,the porch seems to be the large dark hole, that stops you from playing up the front entrance more.

Have you considered a deep burgundy wine color overall with a sweet cream trim?

That would go well with the browns in the shingle.
