Nice! Being larger seeds than most MGs I think you have to plant much more by weight than you do with radish or mustards to get a thick stand.

You've reminded me that I need to sow a flat or 2 now so they are ready to add to my lettuce crop by late May.

Those look so pretty : ) What type of chard and beets did you use for the microgreens? The leaves look a good size too.

It is more that they would come up well and then they would slowly expire. I would end up with a scraggly handful. This batch is has had minimal issues and they are developing true leaves.

I am not sure which varieties are in this mix. It comes from Johnny’s.

I don’t know about other areas but beet greens are a very old fashioned favorite in Maine.

So pretty!. Some of the longer to reach micro maturity like these, more like 20-25 days, I call an 'advance' grow. Density is important. Growing conditions are important. Watering gets a bit more complicated. -not too wet, not too dry. Indoor environments all vary.

Why the bulk of mine are fast growers. Less likely to have dampening off and mold issues. I still grow some slow growers but not often. Thai basil, celery, cilantro, amaranth, etc, but they can be fussy. They could use a bit of food as well since they have used up their own personal germination food. (I use a bit of dry soluble seaweed). A small fan works also.

I've actually taken some of mine I started a couple months ago and transferred into my deck herb pots. So it is possible to take some of these micros and transfer into flats or 4 inch pots for the garden.

I grow a garden variety from johnny's that is used mostly for just the greens. (forgot the name). It does produce mini beets eventually.

Sleevendog - Again I thank you for all of your advice and photos. I feel like I have an easy way to add fresh veggies to my life during Maine’s long winter. Now people are copying me. And so knowledge spreads. Seed companies in Maine have had an insanely busy year!

I mostly grow the faster ones radishes, sunflower, peas. I have spicy and mild mix. The mild mix seems fussier and slower than the spicy (mostly radish?). Borage and Cilantro are slower but I like them both.

I have ordered or had gifts of smaller packets of other varieties. I liked basil, green sorrel and gem marigold a lot. I haven’t quite got the point of celosia - it germinates fine but stays teeny and not too much flavor. Corn was neat to do but kind of bizarre.

The NOW zesty sprout mix is easy to grow as a microgreen as well.

I've said this many times before -- the only reason I tend to preach the fast growers and the cheaper bulk seed is wanting my co-workers, friends and family to first succeed. And decide if they will actually keep up with it. One co-workers five yr old ran around the house, "they taste just like Spring peas!", then proceeded to overwater wanting more. Killed them. (parents not gardeners at all). I think this was two, maybe three years ago. He texted wanting instructions again a couple weeks ago. Seed suppler, etc.

Ooh, agmss, those are pretty. I love beet greens anyway, so tiny little baby beet greens would have to be delicious.
