tub vs shower in master bath reno
Comments (10)Thanks all. My issue with a shower tub combo is I am getting tired of the gross shower liner. I really want to update my bathroom and the curtain/liner has lost its luster for me. I don't like the glass enclosed tub setup, too hard to clean. Maybe someone could help me? I have not found a way to draw a layout online so I can play with designs. My room is 95" wide by 130" deep. On a 2D drawing, along the 'top' wall would be a large linen closet, a 54" single bowl vanity and the toilet. Along the bottom wall, across from the toilet is the 57" bath tub. On the side wall nearest the toilet, there is a 32" window about 20" off the toilet wall. On the opposite side wall is a 36" door in the lower corner. We are planning on taking the room down to the studs and starting over. To save money we would prefer to not move plumbing, especially the toilet, but will if we need to in order to have the best design. BTW, next door to the bathroom, behind the shower wall, is a similar sized walk in closet. Since it is fairly wide, there is a possibility of making it narrower and giving some space to the bathroom, if need be. Wishlist: double sink vanity, toilet behind a privacy wall, walk in shower, whirlpool tub, linen closet. Realistic: double sink vanity and large walk in shower, toilet, linen closet....See MoreJack and Jill tub, roman tub, shower
Comments (20)When I look at vintage houses, I think there are always things that I would never choose myself if I were building a new house, or if I have to replace something. But if there are there and they are in good shape, I would live with them and try to like them for what they are. I would never pick out the elaborate pillar and arch style cabinet doors in the kitchen and other areas of this house, but I wouldn't take them out either. The bathroom I am renovating now is bathroom #2 for that space. It was poorly done in 2000 subway tile style with pedestal sink. (Style is fine, handsome sink, not quite right for the house). There was a crack in the plumbing that could be accessed only by making a hole in the floor of this bathroom, so the whole thing is demo'd. Evidence shows that the original original was white tile with gold sparkles with a gold and black mosaic floor, unknown fixture color, maybe gold. I could as it turns out, replicate the tile in this bathroom (Daltile Golden Granite tile for the white with gold sparkles, and Daltile Keystones porcelain mosaic in Luminary Gold and Black.) The fixtures would have to be black or white, but it would be the original color scheme. I am not going to do that. If it was still here and in good shape I might keep it, but I am not going to duplicate it. But I am going to try and do something that looks like it could possibly be original--just not gold and black....See MoreBathtub shower doors vs. shower curtain, what are pros and cons?
Comments (3)If little kids in the house I'd definitely go shower curtain. If there is a separate master bath, I'd also go with a curtain (in the non-master bath) - I'm tired of cleaning my glass shower surround. A curtain you just throw away/replace or put in the washing machine, so easy. Also I hang lots of things to dry from the shower curtain rod - you lose that functionality with glass doors. I guess non-track glass doors is a higher end look but I live in a HCOL area and the kids' full baths almost always have curtains, no glass. (To sum up: get what you like!) :)...See MoreTub/Shower Combo Spout - can it go in the back/middle of tub?
Comments (4)@catbuilder - the short answer: sometimes my partner & I like to bathe together (and a spout in the back of the neck isn't comfortable.) Longer answer: I have another bathroom with a shower that I expect to use most often for showering. While I want the option of showering in this new, master bath, I anticipate taking baths in this tub more often than showering. Edited to add: a few other spout locations would would work fine for this purpose - I just thought centered on the back would look less weird than pushed back toward the corner of the shower head wall....See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
