Help with kitchen layout

Thoughts on making this kitchen more functional? I am struggling with separating the column refrigerator and freezer on the back wall when the microwave, air fryer and other appliances would be around the corner. I am also not a fan of making the pantry the scullery because I prefer not to leave the kitchen to go behind the kitchen to utilize those appliances. I think this needs an entire rework and I'm open to ideas.

I requested an island with conversation seating for 5, 48" range, 30" column refrigerator and freezer, extra beverage cooler or refrigerator for drinks, prefer not to see appliances out on the countertops like toaster, air fryer or blender and not a fan of microwave drawers.

Doug already knows my views about cooktops on islands. So, I didn't share it when critiquing the original design. My opinion only, but putting a cooking surface on the island is a decision of last resort. Both safety and efficiency are compromised by this type of arrangement. I think the Buehl's idea of using that beautiful front window area for dining is inspired. It would get you and additional 28 sq.ft. in the kitchen. That's not chump change. That front window would be a lovely spot to sit with a cup of coffee and watch the kids. The light would be glorious. Seriously consider moving the kitchen to the rear, moving the dining room to take advantage of the window and sew/craft in the now freed up space in the front of the house, The old dining room in front could be used for a flex room/library/study/extra bedroom for overflow guests/sewing room/home office. Like Doug will tell you, everything is a compromise. Every decision effects another decision. It's just a question of how many comprises you have to make.

We don't have a great one, sadly--right now we use a large 1.75 gallon Oxo bin that fits the green waste bags and seems to hold about a day's worth of food waste for our family, so we take that out to the big bin each night. It just sits on the counter next to the sink and people scrape into it throughout the day. We've tried a few countertop bins over the years and I like this one better than most, partly because it's large enough to get us through a full day. We go through periods of also having a backyard compost, which adds a layer of complication since then we have to separate green waste that can go into that from all the other food waste, but the last couple of years we haven't really been maintaining that so that simplifies things. Because we take the food waste out daily, we typically empty the main trash once a week, unless there's something plastic with food waste on it (and even then I sometimes bag that separately and throw it in the big trash bin instead of putting it in the pullout so that I don't have to empty the whole thing). If you do go the under sink route and aren't doing the plumbing yourself, make sure your plumber knows you plan to do that--we needed a sink with a center drain to make that work (or an offset drain on the opposite side would have been fine too) and our plumber was careful to route the pipes so that we'd have room for the double bins. Our dishwasher's flexible drain does route behind the trash, so it is clipped to the back of the cabinet to make sure it stays clear of the bins.

A to the counter dish cabinet is ONLY THE DEPTH of a normal cabinet above the counter, and you give it glass doors, or mirrored doors if you have to store the idiot carry around water "glasses" : ( Tweaking my pal Rebunky here, because this kitchen , no matter what, will be the best possible it can be, as a casualty of an idiotic wasteful - use - of - space - build ! ....@#$%^& no matter it may wow on entry. Go to a cook top or range top - it will get you drawer storage for pots and pans below. Or leave it as a range, and ask yourself how darn often you must have two? With that, and the move of micro? You simply turn and there are pot and pans in island drawers behind you. Stools/how many or baking/roll the dough sq feet area? Which? That's for you to decide but in no case does that clearance need to be 55" deep. Nobody BUT NOBODY is heading that way. Mom is putting groceries away? Get OUT OF THE WAY! Family life with teen boys?....it's a lot of pizzas after sports. It's a lot of pasta. It's snacks and peanut butter and more snacks. Most family meals with kids will not involve a lot of "sear the trout" . It's a lot of grilled chicken on the deck or roasted chicken . The fume capture? We probably don't want to run a head count of hoods matching the width of the range all over the USA. Range or cook top, one oven or two, three stools or five.....? You want not less than a 36 inch wide island surface. To my kitchen pals? Nobody dies with these clearances. When we find the architect? We can beat the %$#@ out of him. I grew up in a center entrance colonial, with a FLAWED and inconvenient as all hell kitchen. I have made a party for eight from a galley that fits in here three times. There will be no absolutely "perfect" , here. There will be brand new: )

Here's an excerpt from the Featured Answer in Read Me thread that contains most of the info we need: You've provided a sketch of the entire floor the Kitchen in your original post, so what we need now is the fully-measured layout described below. Please post a fully-measured layout of the space under consideration and a sketch of the entire floor. Both can be either hand-drawn, computer generated, or drawn up with computer/app tools. By "fully-measured", we mean a layout with the widths of each wall/window/door/doorway and the distances between each wall/window/door/doorway labeled. See a sample below. If something cannot be moved or changed, label it precisely on your layout (see post in sample) and tell us why it cannot be moved/changed -- we may have some ideas for you. The sketch of the entire floor lets us see how the Kitchen relates to the rest of the home. It doesn't have to be to-scale, but it should accurately show how the rooms relate to each other and should include all interior & exterior doors. In addition, it will help us see how traffic flows in, around, and through the Kitchen. Label the front entry and family entry. The family entry is usually a garage or side entry, but it might not be. It's helpful to know which door you use to bring in groceries. Regardless of how you draw it up (by hand, computer, etc.), please be sure all measurements are labeled. explain a little more..addition to your home? relocating kitchen here? new construction? I dont care for the mudroom or general foot traffic from the outside coming thru the main aisle where sink/fridge get crossing traffic as it appears. showing more of the first floor of the home may help get something more desirable.

Showing aisle spacing would be helpful for best comments. I see a pinch point at the island seating oriented by the range. When butts are in seats this will be problematic. I’d orient the island seating to have 2 at the end and 3 - 4 along the long end. None on the working side.

And yes seeing the whole floor plan is needed. I too am concerned about mudroom orientation and traffic patterns.

This is a new build and on the right side of the house will be three bedrooms. Worth noting, I am also trying to optimize the view from the front of the house and back of the house.

This floorplan could be reworked to get the master bedroom a bigger rear view and privacy than the small window showing for a front view. More to the left could impact that. Like a side entrance garage, etc.

I think this needs an entire rework and I'm open to ideas.

I know you were just referring to the kitchen, but I'll suggest the entire plan needs a rethink.

This looks like a plan where individual rooms were placed, then connected to other rooms as needed. Leftover spaces filled with a closet.

If you want to "optimize the view", don't be timid with windows. Blow the whole wall out.

It is hard for me to read the plan. Does that say "master bedroom" or "maid's bedroom" in the room off the kitchen?

You might as well post the whole floorplan, location area for climate and which side faces South. Any pics of the views or property could help.

I find the front foyer into a breakfast nook very odd. Yes please post the whole floor plan - no dining room?
