New This Week: 3 Baths With Walk-in Showers and Stand-Alone Tubs
See how these spacious bathrooms celebrate elegant stand-alone bathtubs and luxurious walk-in showers
If space is tight and you’re not much of a bath person, it makes sense to say bye-bye to the tub and create a larger walk-in shower. But when you’ve got the room, including a walk-in shower and a stand-alone bathtub is the way to go. The following spaces show how to work the combo.
2. Modern
Designer: Jessica Maktal of Aerial Design and Build
Location: New York City
Size: 80 square feet (7.4 square meters); 8 by 10 feet (2.4 by 3 meters)
Homeowners’ request: Turn an oversize laundry room into a guest bathroom.
Bathtub: A Blu Bathworks bathtub provides a sleek, modern counterpoint to the more traditional elements in the room.
Shower: The spacious shower, which includes the freestanding tub, is separated from the rest of the room by a custom oil-rubbed-bronze-framed glass door and partition. The shower walls are marble tile; the floors are handmade mosaic cement tile. A wide niche supports teak shelves for towels, bath products and flowers or decorative pieces.
Vanity: Custom, solid teak, with custom Calacatta white slab marble top. Full-extension drawers provide organized storage for makeup, hand towels and toilet paper.

Designer secret: “A lot of seemingly disparate elements were paired to create this overall look,” designer Jessica Maktal says. “In keeping the overall color palette fairly neutral, we were able to tie it all together.”
Wall tile: Oyster, 6 by 12 inches, Waterworks; shower floor tile: Trocadero, Mosaic House; tub: Halo, 67 inches, Blu Bathworks, via AF Supply; toilet: Maris, Toto, via AF Supply; medicine cabinet: Robern, via AF Supply; architectural lighting: WAC Lighting; decorative lighting: Gabriel Scott; vanity: custom in solid teak; fittings: Ludlow, Waterworks; shower glass and oil-rubbed-bronze frame: custom, King David Gallery

Designers: Rachael Lewis and Bradley Barnett of Barnett Lewis
Location: Mercer Island, Washington
Size: 202.5 square feet (18.8 square meters); 15 by 13½ feet (4.5 by 4.1 meters)
Homeowners’ request: A large bathroom with lots of light, two vanities and a steam shower big enough for two.
Bathtub: Designers Rachael Lewis and Bradley Barnett finished the exterior of a York pedestal bathtub by Victoria + Albert in a custom color to tie it to the gray vanities and gray accents in the marble. They positioned the piece below a window to capture views of Mount Rainier.
Shower: Twenty-five square feet. Carrara marble tile floor, walls and ceiling. Two marble niches. Two shower heads. Built-in marble corner bench. Handheld body sprayer with steam setting.
Vanities: Custom, Georgian style, with Carrara marble countertops.
Other special features: At night, a Tom Dixon pendant creates dramatic lighting.
Designer secret: “The two most important components to any space are lighting and planning,” Lewis says. “The large window helped us with both, as we were able to position it in a location that eliminated sightlines from the outside in, allowing the light to flood in [without having] to install privacy curtains, while capturing the view to Mount Rainier from the tub. We then planned the rest of the space based on zones, to accommodate a busy morning so that two people could get ready, each at their own vanity.” The homeowners can also have “a soothing steam shower after a rigorous workout or a relaxing evening in the tub with a glass of wine.”
“Uh-oh” moment: “When the framing was complete, the owners decided that they wanted a much bigger shower, so we adjusted the planning for the room, revised the vanity sizes and moved a few walls, all on the fly,” Lewis says. “The result was a beautiful, spacious shower, and with the extra room we were able to accommodate a custom marble bench in the corner of the shower.”
Shower fixtures: Gramercy 312, Watermark; hardware and mirrors: Restoration Hardware; sconces: Schoolhouse Electric & Supply
