Ethernet Cat 6 for Bay Area remodel

Hi - I'm planning on remodeling my place and adding ethernet cat 6 to my. place. Where should I place the ethernet cables in ea. bedroom, living room, etc.? And, what location?

Are you going to put in Ethernet wall outlets or just let the cables hang? Since anything you're going to connect to the Ethernet will probably have to be plugged into a regular AC receptacle, then near such a receptacle. If you're going to have a desk, then behind or right next to the desk.

The simple answer is wherever you plan on using devices that will have an Ethernet connection. Some “smart” televisions, some television set top boxes, desktop computers, and some laptop computers. Devices like Alexa and Google Home plus (most) Roku type boxes don’t have an Ethernet port.

It all really comes down to how you plan on positioning things in your home.

We can't have dish in our development, so it will always be cable. What I really plan on doing is using a good ac router like the Apple airport extreme. I feel like ac wireless is plenty fast enough for me and wireless should only get faster. I currently have two rg6 cables running to the office...one for tv and one for the modem. I've also got rg6 running to all rooms where I might have a tv. I currently don't have cat wiring going to those rooms because as I said I plan on utilizing wireless. I have a wired phone in the kitchen and plan on having wireless handsets in other rooms.

@ace_tx From what I've read a lot of people are suggesting what you said, so I'm thinking that would be a good idea.... can you just help me understand it a bit more? Would I run all four of those wires to where the tv would be in the room? or only 1 rg6 quad coax and 1 6pr cat5e/6 lines to where the tv and they other 2 would be at a different location in the room? (Then of course all those wires would run to the central location, right, and plug into what?, I'm not sure - guess I can figure that out later) Are there any other cables I should have behind my TV in the main viewing area (assuming my dvd player and stuff are in a separate cabinet)? THANKS!

my thingking... I'm inventive and handy with a ships auger and masonary bit! Add it as you need it. My wifi with 100% signal is actually moving around 5 mbyte/s across the room to/from the router. When I get fios I'm not going to be happy if I dont have at least one wired computer for large downloads. Probably wont be happy with my laptop wifi speeds. Takes it a long time now to move even a CD from the Desktop to laptop with wifi. Network cable is like WoW speed after using wifi. I keep a 100 foot network cable coiled at ready and stretch it out to my laptop for things like the soon coming xp sp3 upgrade (350mb) & also for that occasional DVD I want to download and watch. Wifi just is too slow for bigger byte stuff. Wifi DVD downloads and sending movies to set-top media center on wifi, sucks. Other than that kind of stuff, you're right. Don't really need a built in wired local LAN .. networking with all the wifi and other plug instant connect doohickeys is pretty simple, but definitely much slower. Someday you're going to find yourself with a 10 - 30 megaByte internet connection with fios or cable and you;ll not be able to utilize that connection to its potential with wifi though.

Thank you all for your responses! I will clarify a few things, and ask for a few more thoughts. 1. We started out with 7 contractors, but 4 dropped out because they were no longer available. Of the 3 who bid, 2 were near the low end of the range and 1 was at the high end. 2. We got several rough estimates (including from the 2 contractors with lower bids) before going into design, and they were all significantly less than the bids (by about 1/2). That is part of why we were so shocked. 3. We also shared with those 2 contractors what our budget is, which is more in line with the original estimates. The 3rd contractor who bid never asked our budget, and put together his estimate in only a few days - however, it was rather detailed and he claimed it was well padded for our benefit. I'm not sure what that says. 4. I don't believe there is any additional cost for it being a condo. It's a 3 unit building without HOA restrictions, and the other tenants are very supportive of the renovation. I do think because demand is so high right now, pricing could have gone up even just in the few months since we purchased. 5. While we don't have $150K lying around, we could figure out how to make it work if that really is a reasonable price. We bought the place planning to renovate (we got the rough estimates before purchasing so we thought we knew what we were getting into), and after living with a dilapidated kitchen for a few months I would say we can't afford NOT to do the work! But if we're going to be eating ramen out of our gourmet kitchen for the next few years, I don't want to be wondering if it's because I didn't do my due diligence. Because there is a pretty significant gap between our expected/budgeted and the bidded costs, we do want to figure out a way to reduce it somewhat. I am planning to speak with our designer on Monday and see if there are any adjustments we can make that wouldn't destroy the overall look and feel but take out some of the cost. For example, cutting back on the built-ins? Or should we consider reaching out to additional contractors? I like the ones who bid, and I don't want to waste anyone's time, but if there are other reliable contractors who can do the work for significantly less I think it's worth exploring. Roo

Unless the structure itself is very large, has thick walls, or your neighborhood (because of density of signals) impedes Wifi use, I'd think twice about the benefit of running wire.

One of my relatives bought a house that the seller had wired. It wasn't until they moved in and started getting things set up that he discovered how inconveniently located the "home run" site was (terminus where all wires run). He abandoned the thought of using wire and has a very stable and useful Wifi setup in its place, with Google hardware.

I'm currently at my second residence where the homes are closer together than my main home. I checked, there are 18 separate wifi signals currently visible from the PC I'm using now (wirelessly). Funny thing is, my wifi service is excellent everywhere with just one transmission point. and I have 15 devices connected. Never a problem. I choose a channel that has less traffic and check it every few months to see how neighbor signals have been adjusted. If needed, it's easy to move to a less crowded channel.

In places where home size or wall thickness is an issue, the new mesh technology devices can provide great Wifi service over a large area.

One advantage with wired is that you don't need to use a password.

Password entry is a one time thing. I have a variety of devices that are awkward to enter a password for - thermostats, TVs, DVD players, music players. But it doesn't need to be done a second time unless you change the password.

I'm not a proponent of using passwords that look like they came from the NSA or CIA, sequences like 4Y%m!!pp92zq5@@. Mine are nonsense words easy to type and easy to remember. If you're good enough to break my passwords, however unlikely, welcome aboard! There's nothing to find.
